| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Hopkins County are gathering |

| 3 | 3 | | in Austin on March 9, 2017, to celebrate Hopkins County Day at the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Hopkins County has an area of 789 square miles |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | with both blackland prairie and piney wood terrain; originally |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | inhabited by the Caddo and then the Cherokee people, the county |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | was created in 1846 and named for a family of pioneers; Sulphur |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Springs was made the county seat in 1870; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Corn, wheat, sheep, and cattle were important in |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | the 19th century, but cotton became the dominant crop between |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | 1890 and 1930; in 1937 the Carnation Milk Company opened a |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | processing plant in the county, and its presence, in conjunction |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | with better road and rail transportation, allowed dairy farming |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | to become the major agricultural undertaking; in 1990 the county |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | boasted nearly 500 dairies supplying 17 percent of the state's |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | total milk; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Today, Hopkins County has a population of over |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | 36,000, with approximately 16,000 people residing in Sulphur |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Springs; along with dairy production, tourism and food |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | processing and distribution are mainstays of the economy, as are |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | beef cattle and breeding horses; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Sulphur Springs features a number of popular |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | attractions, including the Southwest Dairy Center and Museum, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the Leo St. Clair Music Box Museum, and the Hopkins County |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Heritage Museum and Park; the city's striking all-glass restroom |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | downtown has drawn national attention and was the first of its |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | kind in the United States; moreover, the area is a well-known |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | center for aquatic recreation, with Lake Fork and Cooper Lake |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | State Park offering opportunities for trophy bass fishing, as |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | well as boating and swimming; bird-watchers, hikers, and campers |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | also seek out the county, and special events like the Texas State |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Champion Homemade Ice Cream Freeze Off at the Hopkins County |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Dairy Festival in June are enjoyed by residents and visitors |

| 36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Hopkins County is one of the Lone Star State's true |

| 37 | 37 | | treasures, and its citizens may take great pride in the history |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | and character of their splendid communities; now, therefore, be it |

| 39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 9, 2017, as Hopkins County |

| 41 | 41 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin. |
