| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, On March 16, 2017, dignitaries and citizens from |

| 3 | 3 | | the City of West are coming to Austin to celebrate West Day at the |

| 4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Established at its present site in 1881 and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | officially becoming West nine years later, this small but vibrant |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | community, which was named after farmer, postmaster, and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | businessman Thomas West, retains much of the same charm today |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | that drew people to the area more than 100 years ago; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Among those attracted to this rich farmland were |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Czech immigrants who farmed the land, opened businesses, shared |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | their European culture, and planted roots that are now indelibly |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | woven into the identity of West; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The people of West embrace this heritage, making |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the town known and officially designated as the Czech Heritage |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Capital of the State of Texas and informally calling it the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | "Czech Point of Central Texas"; West is the place to be on Labor |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Day weekend for the annual tradition of Westfest, a celebration |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | of Old World foods, music, arts and crafts, and many other |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | activities; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of West also share in a proud |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | heritage of helping one another through difficult times, such as |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | through the West Fertilizer Company explosion; the citizens |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | joined together to help their neighbors recover from the tragic |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | event, and they became noted for their courage and resolve; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Throughout the years, West has been a premier stop |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | for travelers on the I-35 corridor between Dallas and Austin, due |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | to the bakeries that lure visitors with the promise of kolaches, |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | which are delicious Czech pastries filled with sweet and savory |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | ingredients; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Home to nearly 3,000 people, West is a small town |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | with a big can-do attitude; whether it is for the food, the |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | friendliness, or the largest spring-fed pool in the Lone Star |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | State, residents of West have much to make them proud; now, |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 16, 2017, as West Day at the |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | wishes for an enjoyable and memorable visit to Austin. |
