11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 4
22 WHEREAS, Lions Clubs International is celebrating the
33 100th anniversary of its founding in 2017, and this occasion
44 provides an ideal opportunity to honor the Lions of Texas for
55 their good works; and
66 WHEREAS, Established in 1917 by Melvin Jones as the
77 Association of Lions Clubs, the community service organization
88 held its first national convention that year in Dallas, with 12
99 of the 23 participating clubs hailing from Texas; the Lions
1010 adopted a prime mission a decade later when Helen Keller urged
1111 them to become "Knights of the Blind"; through the years, the
1212 organization has undertaken numerous initiatives benefiting the
1313 visually impaired while also carrying out many other
1414 humanitarian efforts; and
1515 WHEREAS, The Lions of Texas have dedicated themselves to
1616 supporting such national programs as Sight for Kids, which has
1717 provided nearly 20 million screenings, and SightFirst, which
1818 raises funds for cataract operations and for programs to fight
1919 the other major causes of blindness; in addition, Texas Lions
2020 have introduced a number of effective initiatives, among them
2121 Journey for Sight and the Juvenile Diabetes Program; the Midland
2222 Lions became the first regional recycling center for collecting
2323 glasses to send abroad to those in need, and the Lions of Texas
2424 have formed five eye banks to assist in the collection and
2525 distribution of corneas for transplantation and medical
2626 research; and
2727 WHEREAS, Since 1949, the Texas Lions Camp has welcomed
2828 approximately70,000childrenwithphysicaldisabilitiesand
2929 diabetes, providing horseback riding, swimming, campouts, and
3030 other outdoor activities; the Lions of Texas also support disaster
3131 relief, anti-drug campaigns, and vaccination programs; and
3232 WHEREAS, Many Texas Lions have served in key leadership
3333 roles with the parent organization, which today has 1.4 million
3434 members in over 200 locations around the world; Lions Clubs
3535 International was named the top nongovernmental agency in the
3636 world by the United Nations in 2012; and
3737 WHEREAS, Embodying the motto "We Serve," which has guided
3838 Lions Clubs International for more than four decades, the members
3939 of the Lions of Texas have made a lasting, positive impact across
4040 the state and beyond, and they are truly deserving of special
4141 recognition in this centennial year; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4343 Legislature, hereby honor the Lions of Texas on the occasion of
4444 the 100th anniversary of the founding of Lions Clubs International
4545 and extend to the members sincere best wishes for continued
4646 success in their important endeavors; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
4848 Lions of Texas as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
