1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 4
2	2	WHEREAS, Lions Clubs International is celebrating the
3	3	100th anniversary of its founding in 2017, and this occasion
4	4	provides an ideal opportunity to honor the Lions of Texas for
5	5	their good works; and
6	6	WHEREAS, Established in 1917 by Melvin Jones as the
7	7	Association of Lions Clubs, the community service organization
8	8	held its first national convention that year in Dallas, with 12
9	9	of the 23 participating clubs hailing from Texas; the Lions
10	10	adopted a prime mission a decade later when Helen Keller urged
11	11	them to become "Knights of the Blind"; through the years, the
12	12	organization has undertaken numerous initiatives benefiting the
13	13	visually impaired while also carrying out many other
14	14	humanitarian efforts; and
15	15	WHEREAS, The Lions of Texas have dedicated themselves to
16	16	supporting such national programs as Sight for Kids, which has
17	17	provided nearly 20 million screenings, and SightFirst, which
18	18	raises funds for cataract operations and for programs to fight
19	19	the other major causes of blindness; in addition, Texas Lions
20	20	have introduced a number of effective initiatives, among them
21	21	Journey for Sight and the Juvenile Diabetes Program; the Midland
22	22	Lions became the first regional recycling center for collecting
23	23	glasses to send abroad to those in need, and the Lions of Texas
24	24	have formed five eye banks to assist in the collection and
25	25	distribution of corneas for transplantation and medical
26	26	research; and
27	27	WHEREAS, Since 1949, the Texas Lions Camp has welcomed
28	28	approximately70,000childrenwithphysicaldisabilitiesand
29	29	diabetes, providing horseback riding, swimming, campouts, and
30	30	other outdoor activities; the Lions of Texas also support disaster
31	31	relief, anti-drug campaigns, and vaccination programs; and
32	32	WHEREAS, Many Texas Lions have served in key leadership
33	33	roles with the parent organization, which today has 1.4 million
34	34	members in over 200 locations around the world; Lions Clubs
35	35	International was named the top nongovernmental agency in the
36	36	world by the United Nations in 2012; and
37	37	WHEREAS, Embodying the motto "We Serve," which has guided
38	38	Lions Clubs International for more than four decades, the members
39	39	of the Lions of Texas have made a lasting, positive impact across
40	40	the state and beyond, and they are truly deserving of special
41	41	recognition in this centennial year; now, therefore, be it
42	42	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
43	43	Legislature, hereby honor the Lions of Texas on the occasion of
44	44	the 100th anniversary of the founding of Lions Clubs International
45	45	and extend to the members sincere best wishes for continued
46	46	success in their important endeavors; and, be it further
47	47	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
48	48	Lions of Texas as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
