| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Coppell are gathering at the |

| 3 | 3 | | State Capitol to celebrate Coppell Day on March 9, 2017; and |

| 4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, The first known settler in what was originally |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | called Grapevine Springs was James Parish, who moved to the area |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | in the mid-1800s; in time, a farming community developed, and its |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | post office took the name Gibbs in honor of Barnett Gibbs, a |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Dallas lawyer, civic leader, politician, and local real estate |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | investor; strongly supported by the state's farmers, Mr. Gibbs |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | served in the 1880s as lieutenant governor; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The young town acquired rail connections in 1888 |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | with the arrival of the St. Louis, Arkansas and Texas Railway, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and in 1890, the station there was named Coppell, probably after |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | New York financier George Coppell, who had provided crucial |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | assistance to the rail line; two years later, the town adopted |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the name Coppell, and the city incorporated in 1955; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Originally an agricultural center, Coppell today |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | boasts numerous businesses and is a thriving residential community |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | with excellent services, an exemplary parks and recreation system, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | and safe neighborhoods; nearly 12,000 students are enrolled in the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Coppell Independent School District, which is home to multiple |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | National Blue Ribbon campuses; the city benefits from its central |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | location at the heart of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, only five |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | miles from DFW International Airport and 30 minutes from both |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Dallas and Fort Worth; in 2012 and again in 2014, it was named one |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | of the best suburbs in the region by D Magazine, and it has been |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | further recognized by the Texas Commission on Environmental |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Quality and Keep Texas Beautiful; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Coppell residents are building on their past |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | achievements as they work toward an even brighter future, and it is |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | indeed fitting to take this opportunity to honor them; now, |

| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |

| 34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 9, 2017, as Coppell Day at |
