11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 416
22 WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer
33 deaths among women under the age of 50 in the United States and
44 the second most common form of cancer among all women; and
55 WHEREAS, About one in eight American women will develop
66 invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime, and
77 approximately 40,000 people, including some 440 men, die from
88 breast cancer each year; and
99 WHEREAS, Metastatic breast cancer, also known as stage IV
1010 or advanced breast cancer, occurs when the cancer spreads beyond
1111 the breast to other parts of the body; anywhere from 20 to 30
1212 percent of patients initially diagnosed with early-stage breast
1313 cancer will develop metastatic breast cancer, which can occur
1414 many years after their original diagnosis and successful
1515 treatments; and
1616 WHEREAS, There is no cure for metastatic breast cancer; the
1717 median survival rate after a positive diagnosis is only three
1818 years, which is up from 18 months in 1970; and
1919 WHEREAS, Although early detection and medical care play a
2020 vital role in the fight against breast cancer, advanced-stage
2121 breast cancer can spread quickly and inexplicably regardless of
2222 treatment or preventive measures; tremendous therapeutic
2323 advancements have been made, but the need for continued research
2424 is crucial, as the number of annual breast cancer deaths has
2525 remained virtually unchanged for the past 20 years; and
2626 WHEREAS, It is estimated that there are currently between
2727 150,000 and 250,000 individuals living with metastatic breast
2828 cancer in the United States; many patients continue working,
2929 raising families, and living life to the fullest, and with
3030 adequate care, some survive 10 years or more beyond their
3131 diagnosis; and
3232 WHEREAS, Across the Lone Star State and around the country,
3333 a coalition consisting of patient advocates, nonprofits,
3434 academic institutions, and other organizations is taking action
3535 to raise awareness of the disease, to call attention to the need
3636 for more research, and to highlight the importance of emotional
3737 and workplace support in improving the quality of life for
3838 patients; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4040 Legislature, hereby recognize October 13, 2017, as Metastatic
4141 Breast Cancer Awareness Day in Texas and commend all those who
4242 are working on behalf of people with metastatic breast cancer.
