| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Johnie Mae Gillespie Anderson on the joyous occasion of |

| 4 | 4 | | her 100th birthday on January 29, 2017; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Johnie Mae Gillespie was born on January 29, 1917, |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | in Silver Hills, Texas; she attended school in the Brazos County |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | School District until she joined the workforce to help support |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | her family; in the course of her long life, she worked in the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | cotton fields and at a cannery, a winery, and a café, and she |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | served as a hospital laundress and as a domestic worker; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Anderson has been guided in all things by her |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Christian faith; she was a devoted member of Morning Star |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Missionary Baptist Church for 52 years, and she dedicated her |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | time to serving as a Baptist Training Union teacher, a Sunday |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | school teacher, a food bank volunteer, and a member of the Senior |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Mission and the Mission Chorus; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Johnie Mae has lived a fruitful life and is proud |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | to have been among the first mothers to walk in the March of Dimes |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | campaign and to have voted for the nation's first black |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | president; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Anderson is a beloved matriarch who has been |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | blessed with six children, 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | 23 great-great-grandchildren, and a great-great-great-grandchild; |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | in celebration of her birthday, family and loved ones are |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | gathering at the Brazos Valley African American Museum in Bryan, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | where she will be honored as an original resident of Brazos |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | County; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby recognize Johnie Mae Gillespie Anderson as a |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | treasured citizen of Texas and congratulate her on her 100th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | birthday; and, be it further |

| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
