| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the Texas Department of Transportation, which is |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | celebrating its centennial throughout the year; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Established as the Texas Highway Department on |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | April 4, 1917, the earliest incarnation of the state's |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | transportation division was organized 100 years ago with the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | mission of connecting farms and ranches to markets; today, the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Texas Department of Transportation is dedicated to ensuring the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | safe and efficient movement of goods and citizens across 80,000 |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | miles of state-maintained roadways; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, in addition to its |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | previous responsibilities, the department was assigned duties |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | involving aviation, railroads, and ports and waterways in Texas, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | and it ultimately adopted its current name to reflect this expanded |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | jurisdiction; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, In celebration of its 100th anniversary, the Texas |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Department of Transportation has launched a commemorative |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | centennial website and the "Track the Truck" traveling exhibit; |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Texans are invited to track a 1918 Liberty Truck as it makes its |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | way through different regions of the state carrying historical |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | photos and a visual timeline that highlights many of the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | department's significant achievements over the years; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Through a century of collaboration and leadership, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the Texas Department of Transportation has helped connect |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | communities to commerce, people to people, and people to |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | opportunities by building a robust transportation system; |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | department leaders remain committed to their mission of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | providing reliable service and look forward to meeting the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | state's ongoing and evolving transportation needs in the years to |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | come; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby commend all associated with the Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Department of Transportation for their work helping to move |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Texans and commerce throughout the Lone Star State and extend to |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | all best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
