5	5	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
6	6	commemorates the life of Pastor Luther D. Edwards Jr., who died
7	7	October 19, 2016, at the age of 80; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Luther Edwards was born on November 28, 1935, in
9	9	Rankin, to Luther Edwards Sr. and Louise Edwards; he attended
10	10	public school in Palmer and later attended Paul Quinn College and
11	11	the Southern Bible Institute to pursue his love of theology; and
12	12	WHEREAS, He married the late Alice Rose Reagor in 1954, and
13	13	to this union a son was born; he later married Flora Mae Mathis in
14	14	1957, and they were blessed with three children; the couple
15	15	enjoyed nearly 60 years of marriage together, and his children,
16	16	grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were a source of much
17	17	pride and joy for him; and
18	18	WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced his faith in his
19	19	daily life, he accepted his call to the ministry in 1982 and
20	20	served as a pastor in the African Methodist Episcopal Church for
21	21	22 years; he also organized and served as the founding pastor of
22	22	Mayo Christian Fellowship Church; and
23	23	WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he gave
24	24	unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel
25	25	will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to share in his
26	26	life; and
27	27	WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
28	28	and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by
29	29	his family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it
30	30	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
31	31	Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
32	32	family of Pastor Luther D. Edwards Jr.; and, be it further
33	33	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
34	34	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
35	35	Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
36	36	memory of Luther D. Edwards Jr.
