| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Many proud citizens of Dimmit County are visiting |
|---|
| 3 | 3 | | Austin on March 21, 2017, to celebrate Dimmit County Day at the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dimmit County was named after Philip Dimmitt, one |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | of the framers of the Goliad Declaration of Independence; |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | established in 1858, it was formally organized in 1880 with |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Carrizo Springs as its county seat; the town flourished, and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | cattle ranchers established themselves in the county; by 1890, it |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | was home to nearly 100 farms and ranches, averaging over 4,000 |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | acres in size; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, In the first decades of the 20th century, the use |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | of underground water facilitated the introduction of commercial |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | agriculture, bringing new settlers and soaring land values; the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | long growing season and new irrigation methods combined to make |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the county one of the most prolific vegetable-growing areas in |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | the country, and it gained recognition as part of the Texas |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Winter Garden Region; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Drought and the Great Depression took a toll on |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | agriculture in the county in the first half of the 20th century, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | but vegetable farming rebounded following World War II; later, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | water supply problems again hampered farming, ranching regained |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | dominance in the economy, and oil and gas production became |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | increasingly important; the area continues to be known for its |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | abundance of mineral resources; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Today, Dimmit County has a population estimated |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | at approximately 11,000, and in recent years, oil and gas company |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | investment in the Eagle Ford Shale has brought rapid development |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | and a rush of newcomers; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, The people of Dimmit County take great pride in |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | their rich history as they work together to build an even |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | brighter future, and it is indeed fitting that they be honored |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | for their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 21, 2017, as Dimmit County |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend to the delegation sincere |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | best wishes for an enjoyable and informative visit. |
