SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 472 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to honor the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and its dedicated volunteers for their exceptional efforts to reduce the incidence of cancer in our state; and WHEREAS, Recent data from the American Cancer Society indicates that the cancer death rate in the United States has dropped by 25 percent since its peak in 1991; increased investment in cancer research has paid impressive dividends, and the efforts of hardworking health care employees have saved the lives of countless citizens across the nation; and WHEREAS, The volunteers of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network work diligently to reduce cancer rates by funding grassroots, lobbying, and media campaigns and advocating for the use of early detection programs; the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas promotes this mission by accelerating cancer research, prioritizing clinical trials for promising new medications, and helping to inform Texans about cancer prevention strategies and services; and WHEREAS, Although great strides have been made in cancer prevention and research, it is estimated that 1.6 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed in the United States in 2017; the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network volunteers engage local communities and motivate leaders across the state to take the proactive steps necessary in the very important battle against cancer; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commend the volunteers of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and proclaim March 28, 2017, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the organization as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
