2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize the citizens of Hays County, who celebrated the 200th |
---|
4 | 4 | | birthday of their county's namesake, John Coffee Hays, on |
---|
5 | 5 | | January 28, 2017; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A native of Tennessee, John "Jack C." Hays made |
---|
7 | 7 | | his way to Texas, where he joined a Texas Ranger company and |
---|
8 | 8 | | fought alongside other famous Texans for Texas' independence; he |
---|
9 | 9 | | was promoted to captain in 1840, and he became known for engaging |
---|
10 | 10 | | in battles and skirmishes with hostile Native American tribes and |
---|
11 | 11 | | Mexican troops; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Captain Hays and his team of Rangers participated |
---|
13 | 13 | | in important actions at such sites as Plum Creek, Salado, and |
---|
14 | 14 | | Enchanted Rock, and they were involved in conflict during the |
---|
15 | 15 | | Woll Invasion of 1842; he also became known for being among the |
---|
16 | 16 | | first to use the 1844 Navy Colt Paterson revolver and for |
---|
17 | 17 | | suggesting improvements to it that led to the production of the |
---|
18 | 18 | | famed Colt revolver, one of the weapons that helped win the West; |
---|
19 | 19 | | in 1848, Texas Senator Edward Burleson introduced legislation |
---|
20 | 20 | | that created a new county from part of Travis County, and he |
---|
21 | 21 | | honored the Texas hero by naming it Hays County; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, As a tribute to the county's celebrated namesake, |
---|
23 | 23 | | the Hays County Commissioners Court proclaimed January 21 |
---|
24 | 24 | | through 28, 2017, as Colonel John Coffee Hays Week; members of |
---|
25 | 25 | | the Hays County Commissioners Court and the Hays County |
---|
26 | 26 | | Historical Commission joined community members on January 28 for |
---|
27 | 27 | | the official signing of the proclamation and a birthday |
---|
28 | 28 | | celebration for a true Texas legend; now, therefore, be it |
---|
29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby commend all associated with the Hays County |
---|
31 | 31 | | Historical Commission and the Hays County Commissioners Court |
---|
32 | 32 | | for their work preserving our state's storied history and the |
---|
33 | 33 | | legacy of Jack C. Hays and extend to them best wishes for |
---|
34 | 34 | | continued success in all their endeavors; and, be it further |

35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
