11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 480
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the citizens of Hays County, who celebrated the 200th
44 birthday of their county's namesake, John Coffee Hays, on
55 January 28, 2017; and
66 WHEREAS, A native of Tennessee, John "Jack C." Hays made
77 his way to Texas, where he joined a Texas Ranger company and
88 fought alongside other famous Texans for Texas' independence; he
99 was promoted to captain in 1840, and he became known for engaging
1010 in battles and skirmishes with hostile Native American tribes and
1111 Mexican troops; and
1212 WHEREAS, Captain Hays and his team of Rangers participated
1313 in important actions at such sites as Plum Creek, Salado, and
1414 Enchanted Rock, and they were involved in conflict during the
1515 Woll Invasion of 1842; he also became known for being among the
1616 first to use the 1844 Navy Colt Paterson revolver and for
1717 suggesting improvements to it that led to the production of the
1818 famed Colt revolver, one of the weapons that helped win the West;
1919 in 1848, Texas Senator Edward Burleson introduced legislation
2020 that created a new county from part of Travis County, and he
2121 honored the Texas hero by naming it Hays County; and
2222 WHEREAS, As a tribute to the county's celebrated namesake,
2323 the Hays County Commissioners Court proclaimed January 21
2424 through 28, 2017, as Colonel John Coffee Hays Week; members of
2525 the Hays County Commissioners Court and the Hays County
2626 Historical Commission joined community members on January 28 for
2727 the official signing of the proclamation and a birthday
2828 celebration for a true Texas legend; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3030 Legislature, hereby commend all associated with the Hays County
3131 Historical Commission and the Hays County Commissioners Court
3232 for their work preserving our state's storied history and the
3333 legacy of Jack C. Hays and extend to them best wishes for
3434 continued success in all their endeavors; and, be it further
3535 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3636 the county as a memento of this special anniversary.
