5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Janice Evelyn Christensen May, who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | July 10, 2016, at the age of 93; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Janice May was born May 29, 1923, in Walnut Grove, |
---|
9 | 9 | | Minnesota, to Arnold Christensen and Bernice Schauer Christensen; |
---|
10 | 10 | | she graduated summa cum laude with a degree in music from the |
---|
11 | 11 | | University of Minnesota and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa before |
---|
12 | 12 | | continuing her studies and earning master's and doctoral degrees in |
---|
13 | 13 | | political science; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, She joined the faculty at The University of Texas |
---|
15 | 15 | | at Austin in 1965 and enjoyed a long and illustrious career as an |
---|
16 | 16 | | educator and mentor in the Government Department; she served as |
---|
17 | 17 | | the department's pre-law advisor and internship coordinator and |
---|
18 | 18 | | was a charter member of the Southwest Association of PreLaw |
---|
19 | 19 | | Advisors; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Dr. May was recognized as the foremost expert on |
---|
21 | 21 | | the sprawling, 93,000-word Texas Constitution; several generations |
---|
22 | 22 | | of legislators, lobbyists, and scholars sought her out for her |
---|
23 | 23 | | expertise in the ways the document has evolved over time and its |
---|
24 | 24 | | interpretations by the state's courts; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, She was the author of The Texas State Constitution: |
---|
26 | 26 | | A Reference Guide, the coauthor of two editions of a Texas |
---|
27 | 27 | | government textbook, and the author or coauthor of five other books |
---|
28 | 28 | | and 50 journal articles, book chapters, and reference articles, and |
---|
29 | 29 | | she was in high demand as a speaker for conferences and as a |
---|
30 | 30 | | consultant for the governing bodies of other states involved in |
---|
31 | 31 | | amending their constitutions; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Dr. May was active in a number of professional and |
---|
33 | 33 | | civic organizations, notably the League of Women Voters, for |
---|
34 | 34 | | which she served on the board of the national organization and as |
---|
35 | 35 | | president of the local chapter; she was also a longtime member of |
---|
36 | 36 | | the American Association of University Women and an election |
---|
37 | 37 | | observer for ABC News; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, She married the late Francis Barnes May in 1956, |
---|
39 | 39 | | and the couple enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage together; |
---|
40 | 40 | | they took great pleasure in classical music and the opera and |
---|
41 | 41 | | traveled the world to such destinations as France, the Soviet |
---|
42 | 42 | | Union, and China; and |
---|
43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she |
---|
44 | 44 | | gave generously to others, and her wisdom, her perseverance, and |
---|
45 | 45 | | her enthusiasm for scholarship and learning will long be remembered |
---|
46 | 46 | | by all those whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
48 | 48 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
49 | 49 | | family of Janice Evelyn Christensen May; and, be it further |
---|
50 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
51 | 51 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
52 | 52 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
53 | 53 | | memory of Janice Evelyn Christensen May. |
