55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Janice Evelyn Christensen May, who died
77 July 10, 2016, at the age of 93; and
88 WHEREAS, Janice May was born May 29, 1923, in Walnut Grove,
99 Minnesota, to Arnold Christensen and Bernice Schauer Christensen;
1010 she graduated summa cum laude with a degree in music from the
1111 University of Minnesota and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa before
1212 continuing her studies and earning master's and doctoral degrees in
1313 political science; and
1414 WHEREAS, She joined the faculty at The University of Texas
1515 at Austin in 1965 and enjoyed a long and illustrious career as an
1616 educator and mentor in the Government Department; she served as
1717 the department's pre-law advisor and internship coordinator and
1818 was a charter member of the Southwest Association of PreLaw
1919 Advisors; and
2020 WHEREAS, Dr. May was recognized as the foremost expert on
2121 the sprawling, 93,000-word Texas Constitution; several generations
2222 of legislators, lobbyists, and scholars sought her out for her
2323 expertise in the ways the document has evolved over time and its
2424 interpretations by the state's courts; and
2525 WHEREAS, She was the author of The Texas State Constitution:
2626 A Reference Guide, the coauthor of two editions of a Texas
2727 government textbook, and the author or coauthor of five other books
2828 and 50 journal articles, book chapters, and reference articles, and
2929 she was in high demand as a speaker for conferences and as a
3030 consultant for the governing bodies of other states involved in
3131 amending their constitutions; and
3232 WHEREAS, Dr. May was active in a number of professional and
3333 civic organizations, notably the League of Women Voters, for
3434 which she served on the board of the national organization and as
3535 president of the local chapter; she was also a longtime member of
3636 the American Association of University Women and an election
3737 observer for ABC News; and
3838 WHEREAS, She married the late Francis Barnes May in 1956,
3939 and the couple enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage together;
4040 they took great pleasure in classical music and the opera and
4141 traveled the world to such destinations as France, the Soviet
4242 Union, and China; and
4343 WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she
4444 gave generously to others, and her wisdom, her perseverance, and
4545 her enthusiasm for scholarship and learning will long be remembered
4646 by all those whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it
4747 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4848 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4949 family of Janice Evelyn Christensen May; and, be it further
5050 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5151 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5252 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5353 memory of Janice Evelyn Christensen May.
