11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 482
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Lifeline Chaplaincy for its exceptional hospital
44 ministry work; and
55 WHEREAS, A ministry of the Church of Christ, Lifeline
66 Chaplaincy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing
77 compassionate care and support to the seriously ill and their
88 families and caregivers and to being an educational resource for
99 crisis ministry; and
1010 WHEREAS, Lifeline Chaplaincy traces its roots to the
1111 charitable work of Marie Banister, who in 1968 began visiting the
1212 children's ward at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston;
1313 she became known as "The Pillow Lady" after she began bringing
1414 small, handmade pillows to the children; and
1515 WHEREAS, Today, the organization employs five full-time
1616 chaplains and has a great number of committed pastoral care
1717 volunteers who serve in hospitals across the state; its many
1818 programs include the Soft Touch Ministry, which draws on the
1919 inspiration of Marie Banister's work to create and deliver
2020 handmade pillows, lap robes, cancer caps, and other specialty
2121 items to patients; and
2222 WHEREAS, Another key Lifeline Chaplaincy program is
2323 Compassionate Touch, which is dedicated to providing emergency
2424 short-term resources to hospital patients and caregivers; the
2525 program grew out of Lifeline Chaplaincy's long-standing close
2626 relationships with hospital social services personnel, who work
2727 directly with the organization to coordinate help for those in
2828 need, and it now serves more than 2,000 patients and families
2929 each year; and
3030 WHEREAS, Compassionate Touch provides one-time funding for
3131 such immediate expenses as hotels, food, parking, travel, and
3232 utilities, usually within 48 hours, and without bureaucratic
3333 delays; assistance is provided irrespective of a patient's race,
3434 gender, type of injury or illness, age, ethnicity, geographical
3535 origin, or religious preference, and the organization has
3636 disbursed $2.5 million since its inception in 1997; and
3737 WHEREAS, Lifeline Chaplaincy also offers a range of
3838 workshops and seminars to train church leaders and pastoral care
3939 volunteers to help patients and families in crisis; it is truly
4040 fitting that this outstanding organization receive special
4141 recognition for offering support and comfort to those who need it
4242 most; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4444 Legislature, hereby commend the staff and volunteers of Lifeline
4545 Chaplaincy on their commitment to providing care and support to
4646 hospital patients, their families, and their caregivers and extend
4747 to them best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4949 this exceptional organization as an expression of high regard
5050 from the Texas Senate.
