2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize Lifeline Chaplaincy for its exceptional hospital |

4 | 4 | | ministry work; and |

5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A ministry of the Church of Christ, Lifeline |
---|
6 | 6 | | Chaplaincy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing |
---|
7 | 7 | | compassionate care and support to the seriously ill and their |
---|
8 | 8 | | families and caregivers and to being an educational resource for |
---|
9 | 9 | | crisis ministry; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Lifeline Chaplaincy traces its roots to the |
---|
11 | 11 | | charitable work of Marie Banister, who in 1968 began visiting the |
---|
12 | 12 | | children's ward at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston; |
---|
13 | 13 | | she became known as "The Pillow Lady" after she began bringing |
---|
14 | 14 | | small, handmade pillows to the children; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Today, the organization employs five full-time |
---|
16 | 16 | | chaplains and has a great number of committed pastoral care |
---|
17 | 17 | | volunteers who serve in hospitals across the state; its many |
---|
18 | 18 | | programs include the Soft Touch Ministry, which draws on the |
---|
19 | 19 | | inspiration of Marie Banister's work to create and deliver |
---|
20 | 20 | | handmade pillows, lap robes, cancer caps, and other specialty |
---|
21 | 21 | | items to patients; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Another key Lifeline Chaplaincy program is |
---|
23 | 23 | | Compassionate Touch, which is dedicated to providing emergency |
---|
24 | 24 | | short-term resources to hospital patients and caregivers; the |
---|
25 | 25 | | program grew out of Lifeline Chaplaincy's long-standing close |
---|
26 | 26 | | relationships with hospital social services personnel, who work |
---|
27 | 27 | | directly with the organization to coordinate help for those in |
---|
28 | 28 | | need, and it now serves more than 2,000 patients and families |
---|
29 | 29 | | each year; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Compassionate Touch provides one-time funding for |
---|
31 | 31 | | such immediate expenses as hotels, food, parking, travel, and |
---|
32 | 32 | | utilities, usually within 48 hours, and without bureaucratic |
---|
33 | 33 | | delays; assistance is provided irrespective of a patient's race, |
---|
34 | 34 | | gender, type of injury or illness, age, ethnicity, geographical |
---|
35 | 35 | | origin, or religious preference, and the organization has |
---|
36 | 36 | | disbursed $2.5 million since its inception in 1997; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Lifeline Chaplaincy also offers a range of |
---|
38 | 38 | | workshops and seminars to train church leaders and pastoral care |
---|
39 | 39 | | volunteers to help patients and families in crisis; it is truly |
---|
40 | 40 | | fitting that this outstanding organization receive special |
---|
41 | 41 | | recognition for offering support and comfort to those who need it |
---|
42 | 42 | | most; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature, hereby commend the staff and volunteers of Lifeline |
---|
45 | 45 | | Chaplaincy on their commitment to providing care and support to |
---|
46 | 46 | | hospital patients, their families, and their caregivers and extend |
---|
47 | 47 | | to them best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
---|
48 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
49 | 49 | | this exceptional organization as an expression of high regard |
---|
50 | 50 | | from the Texas Senate. |
