| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Society of Mary, a religious movement with a |

| 3 | 3 | | long history in San Antonio, is celebrating 200 years of ministry |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | and service in 2017; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The society traces its origins to France at the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | turn of the 19th century, when William Joseph Chaminade, a |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | diocesan priest who survived the persecution of Catholics during |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | the French Revolution, began forming small faith communities |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | known as sodalities; Father Chaminade and a group of sodalists |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | joined together to establish the Society of Mary on October 2, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | 1817, and pledged to carry out Mary's apostolic mission |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | throughout the world; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The Marianists spread across and beyond Europe |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | before arriving in the United States in 1849; the following year, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | they founded St. Mary's School for Boys in Dayton, Ohio, which |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | would later become the University of Dayton; the organization has |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | remained deeply committed to education, and its members have |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | built numerous other Marianist schools in the United States, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | including St. Mary's University and Central Catholic High School |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | in San Antonio; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The four United States Marianist provinces were |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | consolidated in 2002 to create the Marianist Province of the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | United States; today, the province is composed of approximately |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | 300 Marianist brothers and priests and sponsors or cosponsors 18 |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | secondary schools, 3 universities, 4 retreat centers, 6 parishes, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | and a variety of other ministries; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, For two centuries, the followers of the Society of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Mary have committed themselves wholeheartedly to sharing their |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | faith and uplifting others, and it is indeed fitting to recognize |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the profoundly significant mark that they have made in the lives |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | of countless Texans; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the bicentennial of the Society |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | of Mary and commend those Marianists who have served the people |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | of Texas with compassion and dedication; and, be it further |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | the society as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
