2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | join the members of various Texas and Tejano organizations and |

4 | 4 | | the members of Tejano Monument, Incorporated, in celebrating the |
---|
5 | 5 | | fifth anniversary of the unveiling of the Tejano Monument at the |
---|
6 | 6 | | Texas Capitol; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Tejanos are Texans of Spanish and Mexican descent |
---|
8 | 8 | | whose ancestors were among the first non-indigenous people to |
---|
9 | 9 | | explore and colonize the region that would become Texas; Tejano |
---|
10 | 10 | | Monument, Incorporated, was established in 2001, with the goal of |
---|
11 | 11 | | erecting a monument on the Capitol grounds to commemorate Tejano |
---|
12 | 12 | | influences in Texas history and culture; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The founding Tejano Monument, Incorporated, |
---|
14 | 14 | | executive board consisted of board president Dr. Cayetano |
---|
15 | 15 | | Barrera, who called for the first meeting; vice president Andrés |
---|
16 | 16 | | Tijerina, a professor of history at Austin Community College; |
---|
17 | 17 | | vice president Homero Vera, the editor and publisher of El |
---|
18 | 18 | | Mesteño magazine; vice president Renato Ramirez, the president |
---|
19 | 19 | | and chief executive officer of the International Bank of Commerce |
---|
20 | 20 | | in Zapata, Texas; and secretary-treasurer Richard Sanchez, the |
---|
21 | 21 | | associate vice president for governmental relations at The |
---|
22 | 22 | | University of Texas Rio Grande Valley; these dedicated community |
---|
23 | 23 | | leaders advocated for legislation to authorize the monument, and |
---|
24 | 24 | | in 2001, a concurrent resolution approving the construction of a |
---|
25 | 25 | | privately funded Tejano monument on the Capitol grounds was |
---|
26 | 26 | | passed by the Texas Legislature and signed by Governor Rick |
---|
27 | 27 | | Perry; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Initial funding for the monument was established |
---|
29 | 29 | | through grants, individual donations, and corporate contributions; |
---|
30 | 30 | | in 2007, the legislature approved the use of public funds to |
---|
31 | 31 | | complete the project; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The talented team of professionals selected to |
---|
33 | 33 | | design and construct the monument were engineer Jose I. Guerra, |
---|
34 | 34 | | architect Jaime Beaman, and artist Armando Hinojosa; the |
---|
35 | 35 | | impressive bronze and granite statue was unveiled at a public |
---|
36 | 36 | | ceremony on March 29, 2012, with hundreds of well-wishers in |
---|
37 | 37 | | attendance, and it has since been viewed by thousands of State |
---|
38 | 38 | | Capitol visitors; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby commend the members of Tejano Monument, |
---|
41 | 41 | | Incorporated, and all who participated in creating the Tejano |
---|
42 | 42 | | Monument for raising the public's awareness of the contributions |
---|
43 | 43 | | of Tejanos to our state's storied history and extend best wishes |
---|
44 | 44 | | to all on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the unveiling |
---|
45 | 45 | | of the Tejano Monument at the Texas Capitol; and, be it further |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a |
---|
47 | 47 | | memento of this special anniversary. |
