11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 531
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join the members of various Texas and Tejano organizations and
44 the members of Tejano Monument, Incorporated, in celebrating the
55 fifth anniversary of the unveiling of the Tejano Monument at the
66 Texas Capitol; and
77 WHEREAS, Tejanos are Texans of Spanish and Mexican descent
88 whose ancestors were among the first non-indigenous people to
99 explore and colonize the region that would become Texas; Tejano
1010 Monument, Incorporated, was established in 2001, with the goal of
1111 erecting a monument on the Capitol grounds to commemorate Tejano
1212 influences in Texas history and culture; and
1313 WHEREAS, The founding Tejano Monument, Incorporated,
1414 executive board consisted of board president Dr. Cayetano
1515 Barrera, who called for the first meeting; vice president Andrés
1616 Tijerina, a professor of history at Austin Community College;
1717 vice president Homero Vera, the editor and publisher of El
1818 Mesteño magazine; vice president Renato Ramirez, the president
1919 and chief executive officer of the International Bank of Commerce
2020 in Zapata, Texas; and secretary-treasurer Richard Sanchez, the
2121 associate vice president for governmental relations at The
2222 University of Texas Rio Grande Valley; these dedicated community
2323 leaders advocated for legislation to authorize the monument, and
2424 in 2001, a concurrent resolution approving the construction of a
2525 privately funded Tejano monument on the Capitol grounds was
2626 passed by the Texas Legislature and signed by Governor Rick
2727 Perry; and
2828 WHEREAS, Initial funding for the monument was established
2929 through grants, individual donations, and corporate contributions;
3030 in 2007, the legislature approved the use of public funds to
3131 complete the project; and
3232 WHEREAS, The talented team of professionals selected to
3333 design and construct the monument were engineer Jose I. Guerra,
3434 architect Jaime Beaman, and artist Armando Hinojosa; the
3535 impressive bronze and granite statue was unveiled at a public
3636 ceremony on March 29, 2012, with hundreds of well-wishers in
3737 attendance, and it has since been viewed by thousands of State
3838 Capitol visitors; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4040 Legislature, hereby commend the members of Tejano Monument,
4141 Incorporated, and all who participated in creating the Tejano
4242 Monument for raising the public's awareness of the contributions
4343 of Tejanos to our state's storied history and extend best wishes
4444 to all on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the unveiling
4545 of the Tejano Monument at the Texas Capitol; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
4747 memento of this special anniversary.
