| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The observance of Texas Doctors' Day on March 30, |

| 3 | 3 | | 2017, provides a welcome opportunity to honor the physicians of |

| 4 | 4 | | the Lone Star State for their unwavering commitment to the health |

| 5 | 5 | | and well-being of the people of Texas; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Conceived by Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Dr. Charles B. Almond, the first Doctors' Day was held in Winder, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Georgia, in 1933; the occasion received wider recognition with |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the passing decades, and in 1990, President George H. W. Bush |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | signed legislation designating March 30 of each year as National |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Doctors' Day; this date was selected to commemorate the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery by |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Dr. Crawford W. Long in 1842; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Texas is home to more than 60,000 physicians, who |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | not only provide for the care of others but also serve in many |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | positions of leadership at all levels of society; the Texas |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Legislature has long benefited from the dedication of such |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | individuals, including current state representatives Tom |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Oliverson, J. D. Sheffield, John Zerwas, and Greg Bonnen and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | state senators Dawn Buckingham, Charles Schwertner, and Donna |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Campbell; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Doctors play an essential role in the health care |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | of countless Texans, and their contributions to the welfare and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | prosperity of the state have earned them the respect, admiration, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | and appreciation of their fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 30, 2017, as Texas Doctors' |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Day and pay special tribute to the physicians currently serving |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | in the Texas Legislature. |
