11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 598
22 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Rains County are visiting Austin
33 on April 25, 2017, to celebrate Rains County Day at the State
44 Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Situated between Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork
66 Reservoir, Rains County is blessed with an abundant water supply
77 and fertile soil characteristic of the Blackland Prairie region;
88 the county was formed in the late 1800s from Hopkins, Hunt, and
99 Wood Counties and named in honor of Emory Rains, an early pioneer
1010 who served in the Congress of the Republic of Texas; and
1111 WHEREAS, Rains County initially prospered as an agricultural
1212 and ranching center and today enjoys a diverse economy that
1313 includes oil production, manufacturing, and tourism; and
1414 WHEREAS, The county seat, Emory, which was originally
1515 known as Springville, is now the county's largest town, with a
1616 population of approximately 1,200; it is home to the annual Eagle
1717 Fest celebration held in the winter, when the area lakes are the
1818 home of many American bald eagles and other rare birds; and
1919 WHEREAS, The City of Point was incorporated in the 1960s
2020 and is recognized as the birthplace of the National Farmers
2121 Union, an organization that has grown to include 200,000 members;
2222 the 10 founding fathers of the union are memorialized by a
2323 historic monument in the city, which incorporates a statue of the
2424 union's founder, Isaac Newton Gresham, and a display of the flags
2525 of the union's member states; and
2626 WHEREAS, The county's youngest municipality, East Tawakoni,
2727 was incorporated in 1967 and has experienced significant growth
2828 in recent years; this resort area offers residents the benefits
2929 of a relaxed rural community while providing easy access to
3030 Dallas; notably, the city is connected to its counterpart, West
3131 Tawakoni in Hunt County, by the new Two-Mile Bridge; completed in
3232 2016, this impressive structure replaced the original Two-Mile
3333 Bridge, which was built across Lake Tawakoni in 1959 and was the
3434 longest bridge serving a farm-to-market road at the time of its
3535 construction; and
3636 WHEREAS, One of the smallest counties in the state, but one
3737 of the fastest growing in the nation, Rains County is indeed
3838 playing a vital role in the prosperity of the Lone Star State, and
3939 it is a pleasure to join with our fellow Texans in saluting the
4040 county and its fine citizens; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4242 Legislature, hereby recognize April 25, 2017, as Rains County Day
4343 at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
4444 sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin.
