2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Rains County are visiting Austin |

3 | 3 | | on April 25, 2017, to celebrate Rains County Day at the State |
---|
4 | 4 | | Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Situated between Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork |
---|
6 | 6 | | Reservoir, Rains County is blessed with an abundant water supply |
---|
7 | 7 | | and fertile soil characteristic of the Blackland Prairie region; |
---|
8 | 8 | | the county was formed in the late 1800s from Hopkins, Hunt, and |
---|
9 | 9 | | Wood Counties and named in honor of Emory Rains, an early pioneer |
---|
10 | 10 | | who served in the Congress of the Republic of Texas; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Rains County initially prospered as an agricultural |
---|
12 | 12 | | and ranching center and today enjoys a diverse economy that |
---|
13 | 13 | | includes oil production, manufacturing, and tourism; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The county seat, Emory, which was originally |
---|
15 | 15 | | known as Springville, is now the county's largest town, with a |
---|
16 | 16 | | population of approximately 1,200; it is home to the annual Eagle |
---|
17 | 17 | | Fest celebration held in the winter, when the area lakes are the |
---|
18 | 18 | | home of many American bald eagles and other rare birds; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The City of Point was incorporated in the 1960s |
---|
20 | 20 | | and is recognized as the birthplace of the National Farmers |
---|
21 | 21 | | Union, an organization that has grown to include 200,000 members; |
---|
22 | 22 | | the 10 founding fathers of the union are memorialized by a |
---|
23 | 23 | | historic monument in the city, which incorporates a statue of the |
---|
24 | 24 | | union's founder, Isaac Newton Gresham, and a display of the flags |
---|
25 | 25 | | of the union's member states; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The county's youngest municipality, East Tawakoni, |
---|
27 | 27 | | was incorporated in 1967 and has experienced significant growth |
---|
28 | 28 | | in recent years; this resort area offers residents the benefits |
---|
29 | 29 | | of a relaxed rural community while providing easy access to |
---|
30 | 30 | | Dallas; notably, the city is connected to its counterpart, West |
---|
31 | 31 | | Tawakoni in Hunt County, by the new Two-Mile Bridge; completed in |
---|
32 | 32 | | 2016, this impressive structure replaced the original Two-Mile |
---|
33 | 33 | | Bridge, which was built across Lake Tawakoni in 1959 and was the |
---|
34 | 34 | | longest bridge serving a farm-to-market road at the time of its |
---|
35 | 35 | | construction; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, One of the smallest counties in the state, but one |
---|
37 | 37 | | of the fastest growing in the nation, Rains County is indeed |
---|
38 | 38 | | playing a vital role in the prosperity of the Lone Star State, and |
---|
39 | 39 | | it is a pleasure to join with our fellow Texans in saluting the |
---|
40 | 40 | | county and its fine citizens; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby recognize April 25, 2017, as Rains County Day |
---|
43 | 43 | | at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |
---|
44 | 44 | | sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin. |
