2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	join Texans across the state in celebrating the 100th anniversary
4	4	of the 111th Attack Squadron, Texas Air National Guard; and
5	5	WHEREAS, The 111th Attack Squadron was created in 1917 when
6	6	the United States Department of War authorized the Texas National
7	7	Guard to establish an aviation squadron; originally known as the
8	8	111th Aero Squadron and reconstituted in Houston as the 111th
9	9	Observation Squadron, the unit provided mapping, photography,
10	10	and reconnaissance support for the 36th Infantry Division, Texas
11	11	Army National Guard; and
12	12	WHEREAS, In 1933, Lieutenant Earl Showalter designed a
13	13	livery for the squadron with a distinctive "Ace in the Hole"
14	14	insignia signifying the squadron's ability to always win in
15	15	battle; it was a large lone star reflecting its Texas heritage
16	16	and utilized a black and white color scheme to represent the
17	17	state's economic mainstays of oil and cotton; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Shortly before the United States entered World
19	19	War II, the squadron took part in the Louisiana Maneuvers, the
20	20	first peacetime war games between two field armies in American
21	21	history; during the war, the squadron played an important role in
22	22	Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa; and
23	23	WHEREAS, The unit was redesignated the 111th
24	24	Reconnaissance Squadron, and during the war on terror, the
25	25	squadron reached a milestone of 3,000 consecutive combat days,
26	26	was named the United States Air Force 2011 Intelligence Unit of
27	27	the Year, and was the home unit to the 432nd Air Expeditionary
28	28	Wing's 2013 Sensor Operator of the Year and the 2015 Mission
29	29	Intelligence Coordinator of the Year; it has also been at the
30	30	forefront of Predator aircraft deployments in the Baltic region
31	31	of Europe; and
32	32	WHEREAS, The 111th Reconnaissance Squadron was
33	33	redesignated as the 111th Attack Squadron upon its conversion to
34	34	operate the MQ-9 Reaper, and it has played an integral role in the
35	35	defense of our country for 100 years; it is truly fitting that the
36	36	unit receive special recognition in honor of this milestone in
37	37	its history; now, therefore, be it
38	38	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
39	39	Legislature, hereby commend the 111th Attack Squadron, Texas Air
40	40	National Guard, on its illustrious history and extend to its
41	41	members best wishes for a memorable 100th anniversary
42	42	celebration; and, be it further
43	43	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
44	44	squadron as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
