55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of William Taylor "Spike" Dykes, the
77 celebrated former Texas Tech University football coach, who died
88 March 10, 2017, at the age of 79; and
99 WHEREAS, William Dykes was born on March 14, 1938, in
1010 Lubbock, Texas; he developed a love for sports at an early age,
1111 and he became a star center for the Ballinger High School
1212 Bearcats; and
1313 WHEREAS, Spike Dykes spent more than a decade as a coach at
1414 several Texas high schools, and he joined the Texas Tech Red
1515 Raiders as an assistant coach in 1984; two years later, he took over
1616 as head coach just before the Raiders' 1986 bowl game; over the
1717 course of his legendary career as head coach, he led the Raiders to
1818 an additional six bowl games; the Raiders had played in only one
1919 bowl game in the eight years prior to his leadership; and
2020 WHEREAS, Coach Dykes guided the Raiders to more at-home
2121 wins than any coach in the team's history at that time, and he
2222 ended his storied career at Texas Tech University with an 82-67-1
2323 record; he was a three-time Southwest Conference Coach of the
2424 Year, and he was named Big 12 Coach of the Year for 1996; he was
2525 inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame the week of his 70th
2626 birthday; and
2727 WHEREAS, Spike Dykes was a loving husband and father; in
2828 addition to his skill as a coach, he was known for his quick wit,
2929 his warm and gracious nature, and his folksy storytelling; he was
3030 a treasured Texan and a cherished friend, even to some of his
3131 fiercest competitors on the field, and his legacy as a beloved
3232 coach and father figure to many will never be forgotten; now,
3333 therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3535 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3636 family of William Taylor "Spike" Dykes; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3838 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
3939 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4040 memory of Spike Dykes.
