5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of William Taylor "Spike" Dykes, the |
---|
7 | 7 | | celebrated former Texas Tech University football coach, who died |
---|
8 | 8 | | March 10, 2017, at the age of 79; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, William Dykes was born on March 14, 1938, in |
---|
10 | 10 | | Lubbock, Texas; he developed a love for sports at an early age, |
---|
11 | 11 | | and he became a star center for the Ballinger High School |
---|
12 | 12 | | Bearcats; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Spike Dykes spent more than a decade as a coach at |
---|
14 | 14 | | several Texas high schools, and he joined the Texas Tech Red |
---|
15 | 15 | | Raiders as an assistant coach in 1984; two years later, he took over |
---|
16 | 16 | | as head coach just before the Raiders' 1986 bowl game; over the |
---|
17 | 17 | | course of his legendary career as head coach, he led the Raiders to |
---|
18 | 18 | | an additional six bowl games; the Raiders had played in only one |
---|
19 | 19 | | bowl game in the eight years prior to his leadership; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Coach Dykes guided the Raiders to more at-home |
---|
21 | 21 | | wins than any coach in the team's history at that time, and he |
---|
22 | 22 | | ended his storied career at Texas Tech University with an 82-67-1 |
---|
23 | 23 | | record; he was a three-time Southwest Conference Coach of the |
---|
24 | 24 | | Year, and he was named Big 12 Coach of the Year for 1996; he was |
---|
25 | 25 | | inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame the week of his 70th |
---|
26 | 26 | | birthday; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Spike Dykes was a loving husband and father; in |
---|
28 | 28 | | addition to his skill as a coach, he was known for his quick wit, |
---|
29 | 29 | | his warm and gracious nature, and his folksy storytelling; he was |
---|
30 | 30 | | a treasured Texan and a cherished friend, even to some of his |
---|
31 | 31 | | fiercest competitors on the field, and his legacy as a beloved |
---|
32 | 32 | | coach and father figure to many will never be forgotten; now, |
---|
33 | 33 | | therefore, be it |

34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
36 | 36 | | family of William Taylor "Spike" Dykes; and, be it further |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
38 | 38 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |

40 | 40 | | memory of Spike Dykes. |
