| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the citizens of Marble Falls in celebrating the 100th |

| 4 | 4 | | anniversary of the election of Ophelia "Birdie" Crosby Harwood as |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | the first woman mayor in Texas; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, On April 2, 1917, several years before the passage |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | guaranteed women the right to vote, the people of Marble Falls |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | elected Birdie Harwood as their mayor; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Born in 1872 in Blanco County, Birdie married Dr. |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | George Harwood, and they and their three sons settled in Marble |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Falls around 1900; Mrs. Harwood sought public office on the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | principle that once a woman had raised her children, it was her |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | duty to do what she could to improve the community in which she |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | lived; she ran on a platform of making the town clean and inviting |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | and one of the beautiful spots in the state; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today, women hold positions of political |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | influence throughout the state and nation, but it is truly |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | fitting that those pioneers who paved the way for them receive |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life and legacy of Ophelia |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | "Birdie" Crosby Harwood on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | her election as the first woman mayor in Texas; and, be it further |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |

| 26 | 26 | | honor of this historic occasion. |
