11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 629
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join the citizens of Marble Falls in celebrating the 100th
44 anniversary of the election of Ophelia "Birdie" Crosby Harwood as
55 the first woman mayor in Texas; and
66 WHEREAS, On April 2, 1917, several years before the passage
77 of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which
88 guaranteed women the right to vote, the people of Marble Falls
99 elected Birdie Harwood as their mayor; and
1010 WHEREAS, Born in 1872 in Blanco County, Birdie married Dr.
1111 George Harwood, and they and their three sons settled in Marble
1212 Falls around 1900; Mrs. Harwood sought public office on the
1313 principle that once a woman had raised her children, it was her
1414 duty to do what she could to improve the community in which she
1515 lived; she ran on a platform of making the town clean and inviting
1616 and one of the beautiful spots in the state; and
1717 WHEREAS, Today, women hold positions of political
1818 influence throughout the state and nation, but it is truly
1919 fitting that those pioneers who paved the way for them receive
2020 special recognition; now, therefore, be it
2121 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
2222 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life and legacy of Ophelia
2323 "Birdie" Crosby Harwood on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of
2424 her election as the first woman mayor in Texas; and, be it further
2525 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
2626 honor of this historic occasion.
