| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Richard Overton on the grand occasion of his 111th |

| 4 | 4 | | birthday, on May 11, 2017; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Richard Overton is America's oldest living combat |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | veteran; born May 11, 1906, he served the nation with distinction |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | in the United States Army in World War II; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, He was a member of the all-black 1887th Engineer |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Aviation Battalion; during his service, he witnessed the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | destruction at Pearl Harbor and fought in such Pacific theater |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | engagements as Iwo Jima and Okinawa; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, He credits his longevity to beginning his day with |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | a splash of whiskey in his morning coffee, smoking at least 12 |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Tampa Sweet cigars a day, and enjoying a steady diet of fried |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | catfish and butter pecan ice cream; he has also kept an active |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | lifestyle by working in the yard, trimming trees, helping with the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | horses, cleaning the driveways, and not watching television; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Richard Overton has lived through times and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | experienced events that many people only know from history books; |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | his life has given him a unique perspective on current events, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and there is much to be learned from the wisdom he has gained over |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the years; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Legislature, hereby commend Richard Overton on his exceptional |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | service to the country and his many achievements and extend to |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | him best wishes on his 111th birthday; and, be it further |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
