2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | join the Harris County Historical Commission in celebrating the |
---|
4 | 4 | | dedication of an Official Texas Historical Marker in honor of the |
---|
5 | 5 | | life of James Robert Cade; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, James Robert Cade was an English immigrant who |
---|
7 | 7 | | arrived in the United States in 1869; he and his wife settled in |
---|
8 | 8 | | Harrisburg, Texas, in 1873, and drawing on his experience in |
---|
9 | 9 | | England as a railroad carpenter, he procured a job with the |
---|
10 | 10 | | Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway Company as a |
---|
11 | 11 | | railcar builder; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, After the company was acquired by the Southern |
---|
13 | 13 | | Pacific Railway Company, he advanced to executive status, and in |
---|
14 | 14 | | 1885, he was designated master car builder for Southern Pacific's |
---|
15 | 15 | | Atlantic System, a position which entailed managing the private |
---|
16 | 16 | | car manufacturing division; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Private cars constructed during his tenure were |
---|
18 | 18 | | noted for their high-quality craftsmanship and for the use of the |
---|
19 | 19 | | latest technology and finest materials; he also played a leading |
---|
20 | 20 | | role in the railroad industry's conversion to the use of iron |
---|
21 | 21 | | beams instead of timbers in the construction of railcars, thus |
---|
22 | 22 | | enhancing the safety of rail transportation; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Active in civic affairs, Mr. Cade was a cofounder |
---|
24 | 24 | | of Saint Mary's Episcopal Church in Houston and served as |
---|
25 | 25 | | president of the Mechanics Building and Loan Association; it is |
---|
26 | 26 | | truly fitting that he and his contributions to the community and |
---|
27 | 27 | | state be recognized with an Official Texas Historical Marker; |
---|
28 | 28 | | now, therefore, be it |
---|
29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby commend the Harris County Historical |
---|
31 | 31 | | Commission on its commitment to preserving the area's rich history |
---|
32 | 32 | | and extend to its members best wishes for a memorable dedication |
---|
33 | 33 | | ceremony for the James Robert Cade Official Texas Historical |
---|
34 | 34 | | Marker; and, be it further |

35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

36 | 36 | | the commission in honor of this event and as an expression of |
