| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The conclusion of Ismael G. Casanova's tenure as a |

| 3 | 3 | | deacon of the Archdiocese of San Antonio in 2016 provides a |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | fitting opportunity to recognize the contributions of this |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | esteemed Texan; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A San Antonio native, Mr. Casanova grew up in the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Catholic faith; he graduated from Harlandale High School in 1960 |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | and worked at the local air force base for three years before |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | joining the United States Army; in 1967, after serving a tour of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | duty in Vietnam, he received his honorable discharge; the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | following year, he married Sylvia Ann Velazquez, and the couple |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | raised two sons, Ismael and Leonel, and shared 30 joyous years |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | until her death in 1998; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Casanova earned a bachelor's degree from Texas |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | State University in 1977 and went on to enjoy a career with the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, first |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | at its regional office in Dallas and then at the office in San |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Antonio; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Following his return to San Antonio, Mr. Casanova |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | became actively involved in leading the youth ministry program at |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | San Fernando Cathedral, and in 1993, he felt a calling to serve |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the church in a more formal capacity; that year, he entered the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | diaconate program, and he was ordained as a deacon on August 29, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | 1997; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, Deacon Casanova served at San |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Fernando Cathedral as well as at Saint Mary Magdalen Church; his |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | dutiesincludedvisitingthesick,teaching,counseling,and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | volunteering his time on a number of parish committees and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | councils; he retired from the diaconate on June 28, 2016; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Ismael Casanova has set an inspiring example of |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | faith in action, and countless residents of the San Antonio |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | community have benefited from his wisdom and able leadership; |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby recognize Deacon Ismael G. Casanova for his |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | service to the Archdiocese of San Antonio and extend to him |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Deacon |

| 39 | 39 | | Casanova as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
