11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 665
22 WHEREAS, Across Texas, the inaugural observance of Every Kid
33 Healthy Week is taking place from April 24 through 28, 2017; and
44 WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is home to more than 7 million
55 residents under the age of 18, a segment that represents over 26
66 percent of the total population; of those young people, nearly 20
77 percent are considered obese, a condition that can lead to a host
88 of serious health issues, including heart disease, type 2
99 diabetes, asthma, sleep difficulties, and low self-esteem; and
1010 WHEREAS, At the national level, 75 percent of health care
1111 expenditures go toward diagnosing and treating chronic
1212 illnesses, many of which have been linked to obesity and physical
1313 inactivity; moreover, the State of Texas annually spends nearly
1414 $6,000 per capita on health care; and
1515 WHEREAS, Regular physical activity can produce such
1616 long-term benefits as greater cardiorespiratory and muscular
1717 fitness, better bone health, reduced symptoms of depression, and
1818 improved academic performance; the United States Department of
1919 Health and Human Services recommends children and adolescents
2020 participate in an hour or more of physical activity daily,
2121 through a combination of aerobic and muscle-strengthening and
2222 bone-strengthening activities, yet only about 27 percent of
2323 young Texans meet those suggested levels; and
2424 WHEREAS, In an effort to combat the rising levels of
2525 childhood obesity, health clubs throughout the state have
2626 created programs specifically designed to encourage families to
2727 exercise and follow a healthy diet; in recent years, such
2828 initiatives have spurred a dramatic increase in the number of
2929 health club members under the age of 18; and
3030 WHEREAS, Childhood obesity not only negatively affects our
3131 young people's quality of life but also leads to higher health
3232 care costs, and this weeklong campaign to raise awareness of this
3333 issue serves as a valuable way of educating the public about a
3434 critical health epidemic facing our state; now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3636 Legislature, hereby recognize April 24-28, 2017, as Every Kid
3737 Healthy Week and encourage all Texans to meet the recommended
