11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 678
22 WHEREAS, Family-owned businesses are the backbone of Texas
33 communities, and for 60 years Gonzalez Place tavern has played a
44 vital role in the life of Weslaco; and
55 WHEREAS, The tavern was established on Texas Boulevard in
66 Weslaco in 1957 by Fidencio Martinez Gonzalez, who had emigrated
77 from Mexico at the age of 14 during the Great Depression; and
88 WHEREAS, Conceived from the beginning as a warm,
99 unpretentious gathering spot, Gonzalez Place soon became
1010 inextricably woven into the social fabric of the community; and
1111 WHEREAS, Over the years, the business has remained in the
1212 Gonzalez family; Relio and Sergio Gonzalez, brothers of the
1313 tavern's founder, played their part in managing the business, and
1414 it is currently run by the founder's son, Daniel Fidencio
1515 Gonzalez; and
1616 WHEREAS, Today, Gonzalez Place is known as the oldest
1717 tavern in Weslaco; while it maintains its traditional ties to the
1818 community, it continues to be a welcoming place for new
1919 generations of Weslaco residents to meet and enjoy; now,
2020 therefore, be it
2121 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
2222 Legislature, hereby recognize Gonzalez Place tavern in Weslaco
2323 on its 60th anniversary and extend to the tavern's owners and
2424 patrons sincere best wishes for continued good fellowship; and,
2525 be it further
2626 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2727 the tavern as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
