2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize Johnny N. Mata, who is receiving a Lifetime Achievement |

4 | 4 | | Award and is being honored with a celebration for his 80th |
---|
5 | 5 | | birthday; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, For many years, Johnny Mata has been a champion of |
---|
7 | 7 | | social justice, education, and civil rights in Houston and across |
---|
8 | 8 | | the state; after serving his country as a member of the United |
---|
9 | 9 | | States Army, he joined the Gulf Coast Community Services |
---|
10 | 10 | | Association, where he served with distinction for 32 years and |
---|
11 | 11 | | where his tireless commitment to helping those struggling to make |
---|
12 | 12 | | better lives for themselves had a profound impact on countless |
---|
13 | 13 | | people; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Committed to a life of service on behalf of the |
---|
15 | 15 | | underprivileged and the Latino communities, Mr. Mata has been an |
---|
16 | 16 | | outspoken voice against prejudice and injustice through his work |
---|
17 | 17 | | with a number of organizations; as a member of the League of |
---|
18 | 18 | | United Latin American Citizens, he has held numerous leadership |
---|
19 | 19 | | positions; he has served six terms as the director of two local |
---|
20 | 20 | | districts and two terms as Texas state director; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Mata has been responsible for bringing to the |
---|
22 | 22 | | forefront issues regarding law enforcement and education in the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Hispanic community; he was a founding member of the Latino |
---|
24 | 24 | | Learning Center, which serves the educational needs of |
---|
25 | 25 | | Hispanics, and he has been recognized nationally for advocating |
---|
26 | 26 | | for the hiring of Hispanic educators and administrators in public |
---|
27 | 27 | | school districts; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, In 1999, Mr. Mata founded the Greater Houston |
---|
29 | 29 | | Coalition for Justice, an umbrella organization of more than 25 |
---|
30 | 30 | | civil rights and advocacy groups dedicated to raising awareness |
---|
31 | 31 | | of human rights issues and to addressing deficiencies in the |
---|
32 | 32 | | Greater Houston area's criminal justice system; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, The coalition played a vital role in reforming the |
---|
34 | 34 | | way Texas grand juries are selected so that they better represent |
---|
35 | 35 | | a broad cross-section of the community; the work of the |
---|
36 | 36 | | organization has also included addressing the issues of the use |
---|
37 | 37 | | of deadly force by police officers against minorities and the |
---|
38 | 38 | | treatment of immigrants and of the mentally ill; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Johnny Mata has been instrumental in improving the |
---|
40 | 40 | | lives of people across Texas and the country, and it is truly fitting |
---|
41 | 41 | | that he receive special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby commend Johnny N. Mata on his deep and |
---|
44 | 44 | | abiding commitment to the causes of social justice and equal |
---|
45 | 45 | | rights and extend to him best wishes for continued success as he |
---|
46 | 46 | | celebrates his 80th birthday; and, be it further |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him |
---|
48 | 48 | | as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
