11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 684
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Johnny N. Mata, who is receiving a Lifetime Achievement
44 Award and is being honored with a celebration for his 80th
55 birthday; and
66 WHEREAS, For many years, Johnny Mata has been a champion of
77 social justice, education, and civil rights in Houston and across
88 the state; after serving his country as a member of the United
99 States Army, he joined the Gulf Coast Community Services
1010 Association, where he served with distinction for 32 years and
1111 where his tireless commitment to helping those struggling to make
1212 better lives for themselves had a profound impact on countless
1313 people; and
1414 WHEREAS, Committed to a life of service on behalf of the
1515 underprivileged and the Latino communities, Mr. Mata has been an
1616 outspoken voice against prejudice and injustice through his work
1717 with a number of organizations; as a member of the League of
1818 United Latin American Citizens, he has held numerous leadership
1919 positions; he has served six terms as the director of two local
2020 districts and two terms as Texas state director; and
2121 WHEREAS, Mr. Mata has been responsible for bringing to the
2222 forefront issues regarding law enforcement and education in the
2323 Hispanic community; he was a founding member of the Latino
2424 Learning Center, which serves the educational needs of
2525 Hispanics, and he has been recognized nationally for advocating
2626 for the hiring of Hispanic educators and administrators in public
2727 school districts; and
2828 WHEREAS, In 1999, Mr. Mata founded the Greater Houston
2929 Coalition for Justice, an umbrella organization of more than 25
3030 civil rights and advocacy groups dedicated to raising awareness
3131 of human rights issues and to addressing deficiencies in the
3232 Greater Houston area's criminal justice system; and
3333 WHEREAS, The coalition played a vital role in reforming the
3434 way Texas grand juries are selected so that they better represent
3535 a broad cross-section of the community; the work of the
3636 organization has also included addressing the issues of the use
3737 of deadly force by police officers against minorities and the
3838 treatment of immigrants and of the mentally ill; and
3939 WHEREAS, Johnny Mata has been instrumental in improving the
4040 lives of people across Texas and the country, and it is truly fitting
4141 that he receive special recognition; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4343 Legislature, hereby commend Johnny N. Mata on his deep and
4444 abiding commitment to the causes of social justice and equal
4545 rights and extend to him best wishes for continued success as he
4646 celebrates his 80th birthday; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
4848 as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
