2	2	WHEREAS, Former San Antonio Spurs player George "Iceman"
3	3	Gervin is celebrating his 65th birthday on April 26, 2017, and
4	4	this occasion presents a welcome opportunity to recognize not
5	5	only his remarkable athletic achievements but also his stellar
6	6	record of service to the Alamo City; and
7	7	WHEREAS, Born in 1952, George Gervin played basketball at
8	8	Eastern Michigan University, where he tallied a total of 1,044
9	9	points and 562 rebounds and gained recognition for his
10	10	devastating outside jump shot and his equally adept skills in
11	11	driving to the basket, artfully avoiding defenders, and
12	12	successfully finishing a play with his trademark finger-roll
13	13	layup; in honor of his singular accomplishments, the university
14	14	retired his jersey in 1986 and inducted him into the university's
15	15	Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Mr. Gervin began his professional career with the
17	17	Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association, and
18	18	during his four-year tenure in the ABA, he established a
19	19	reputation as an unstoppable offensive force on the hardwood and
20	20	earned All-Star status three times; he also received the nickname
21	21	"Iceman" for his extraordinarily consistent production and
22	22	on-court demeanor and his clutch performances when the game was
23	23	on the line; and
24	24	WHEREAS, In 1974, Mr. Gervin was acquired by the San
25	25	Antonio Spurs, and after the franchise joined the National
26	26	Basketball Association in 1976, he helped lead the team to five
27	27	division titles over nine years; moreover, he garnered All-Star
28	28	honors nine consecutive times and received the Most Valuable
29	29	Player Award for his outstanding performance in the 1980 All-Star
30	30	Game; and
31	31	WHEREAS, Among the best players to ever don the silver and
32	32	black of San Antonio, Mr. Gervin scored a career total of 26,595
33	33	points, and today he remains the Spurs' all-time leader in points
34	34	per game and ranks among the top five in franchise history in
35	35	field goals made and attempted, free throws made, rebounds,
36	36	assists, steals, and blocked shots; in addition, he is one of
37	37	only three players in league history to win at least four scoring
38	38	titles, along with Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain, and ranks
39	39	in the top 50 of all-time NBA scoring leaders; the Spurs retired
40	40	his number 44 jersey in December 1987, and he is one of only six
41	41	San Antonio players to ever receive that honor; and
42	42	WHEREAS, Since his retirement, Mr. Gervin has been
43	43	accorded a host of other prestigious accolades; in 1996, he
44	44	became the first Spurs player to be inducted into the Naismith
45	45	Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and he was also one of the
46	46	inaugural inductees of the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame and
47	47	was selected for inclusion in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame;
48	48	moreover, he has been named one of the 50 greatest players in
49	49	league history by the NBA, earning his rightful place in a
50	50	pantheon of basketball legends whose exploits have helped shape
51	51	the game they love; and
52	52	WHEREAS, Today, Mr. Gervin serves as a community relations
53	53	representative with the Spurs, a role in which he devotes
54	54	considerable time and energy to speaking at schools, banquets,
55	55	and charities, coaching at basketball clinics, and lending his
56	56	respected voice to a number of valuable public service
57	57	announcements; outside the organization, he has further
58	58	benefited the city as the founder of the George Gervin Youth
59	59	Center, an institution dedicated to helping educate local kids,
60	60	assisting senior citizens with finding quality affordable
61	61	housing, and providing young adults with the necessary resources
62	62	to become productive members of the community; and
63	63	WHEREAS, George Gervin built one of the most storied
64	64	careers in Spurs franchise history and has continued to give back
65	65	to the local community ever since, and he is indeed deserving of
66	66	special recognition; now, therefore, be it
67	67	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
68	68	Legislature, hereby congratulate George "Iceman" Gervin on his
69	69	65th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for the
70	70	future; and, be it further
71	71	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
72	72	Mr. Gervin as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
