11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 685
22 WHEREAS, Former San Antonio Spurs player George "Iceman"
33 Gervin is celebrating his 65th birthday on April 26, 2017, and
44 this occasion presents a welcome opportunity to recognize not
55 only his remarkable athletic achievements but also his stellar
66 record of service to the Alamo City; and
77 WHEREAS, Born in 1952, George Gervin played basketball at
88 Eastern Michigan University, where he tallied a total of 1,044
99 points and 562 rebounds and gained recognition for his
1010 devastating outside jump shot and his equally adept skills in
1111 driving to the basket, artfully avoiding defenders, and
1212 successfully finishing a play with his trademark finger-roll
1313 layup; in honor of his singular accomplishments, the university
1414 retired his jersey in 1986 and inducted him into the university's
1515 Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993; and
1616 WHEREAS, Mr. Gervin began his professional career with the
1717 Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association, and
1818 during his four-year tenure in the ABA, he established a
1919 reputation as an unstoppable offensive force on the hardwood and
2020 earned All-Star status three times; he also received the nickname
2121 "Iceman" for his extraordinarily consistent production and
2222 on-court demeanor and his clutch performances when the game was
2323 on the line; and
2424 WHEREAS, In 1974, Mr. Gervin was acquired by the San
2525 Antonio Spurs, and after the franchise joined the National
2626 Basketball Association in 1976, he helped lead the team to five
2727 division titles over nine years; moreover, he garnered All-Star
2828 honors nine consecutive times and received the Most Valuable
2929 Player Award for his outstanding performance in the 1980 All-Star
3030 Game; and
3131 WHEREAS, Among the best players to ever don the silver and
3232 black of San Antonio, Mr. Gervin scored a career total of 26,595
3333 points, and today he remains the Spurs' all-time leader in points
3434 per game and ranks among the top five in franchise history in
3535 field goals made and attempted, free throws made, rebounds,
3636 assists, steals, and blocked shots; in addition, he is one of
3737 only three players in league history to win at least four scoring
3838 titles, along with Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain, and ranks
3939 in the top 50 of all-time NBA scoring leaders; the Spurs retired
4040 his number 44 jersey in December 1987, and he is one of only six
4141 San Antonio players to ever receive that honor; and
4242 WHEREAS, Since his retirement, Mr. Gervin has been
4343 accorded a host of other prestigious accolades; in 1996, he
4444 became the first Spurs player to be inducted into the Naismith
4545 Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and he was also one of the
4646 inaugural inductees of the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame and
4747 was selected for inclusion in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame;
4848 moreover, he has been named one of the 50 greatest players in
4949 league history by the NBA, earning his rightful place in a
5050 pantheon of basketball legends whose exploits have helped shape
5151 the game they love; and
5252 WHEREAS, Today, Mr. Gervin serves as a community relations
5353 representative with the Spurs, a role in which he devotes
5454 considerable time and energy to speaking at schools, banquets,
5555 and charities, coaching at basketball clinics, and lending his
5656 respected voice to a number of valuable public service
5757 announcements; outside the organization, he has further
5858 benefited the city as the founder of the George Gervin Youth
5959 Center, an institution dedicated to helping educate local kids,
6060 assisting senior citizens with finding quality affordable
6161 housing, and providing young adults with the necessary resources
6262 to become productive members of the community; and
6363 WHEREAS, George Gervin built one of the most storied
6464 careers in Spurs franchise history and has continued to give back
6565 to the local community ever since, and he is indeed deserving of
6666 special recognition; now, therefore, be it
6767 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
6868 Legislature, hereby congratulate George "Iceman" Gervin on his
6969 65th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for the
7070 future; and, be it further
7171 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
7272 Mr. Gervin as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
