55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Brownsville in mourning the loss of Renato E.
77 Cardenas, who died April 21, 2017, at the age of 86; and
88 WHEREAS, Renato Cardenas was born on December 8, 1930, in
99 Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico; he moved to Brownsville at the age
1010 of 11 to live with his aunt, and he attended Brownsville public
1111 schools; and
1212 WHEREAS, Renato joined the United States Air Force as a
1313 young man; he served with distinction during the Korean conflict,
1414 and he completed his military service having earned the rank of
1515 staff sergeant; he graduated from Texas Southmost College and
1616 also attended Pan American University in Edinburg; and
1717 WHEREAS, Mr. Cardenas had a rewarding career as an
1818 entrepreneur and found notable success in both real estate
1919 development and automotive sales; he began developing
2020 subdivisions in Brownsville in 1969 and later established
2121 Cardenas Development Company, Incorporated; he opened an
2222 automotive dealership in 1971, and today, the Cardenas Group of
2323 automotive dealerships includes locations in Harlingen and
2424 Raymondville; and
2525 WHEREAS, Renato Cardenas was a generous man who worked
2626 tirelessly on behalf of his community; he served as a Brownsville
2727 city commissioner for a number of years, and he was a cofounder of
2828 Valley Community Hospital, the Brownsville Foundation for Health
2929 and Education, and Sunrise Bank; he served on the boards of
3030 numerous professional and civic organizations, and he was a
3131 member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church for 50 years; and
3232 WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Mr. Cardenas shared 61 years
3333 of marriage with Mary Rose Cardenas, and they were blessed with
3434 five children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren;
3535 he was beloved by many, and he leaves behind memories that will
3636 long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in his life;
3737 now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3939 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4040 family of Renato E. Cardenas; and, be it further
4141 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4242 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4343 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4444 memory of Renato Cardenas.
