| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the Texas Medical Association and May 9, 2017, as the |

| 4 | 4 | | Texas Medical Association Ernest and Sarah Butler Awards for |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | Excellence in Science Teaching Day; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, This special occasion is taking place in |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | conjunction with National Teacher Appreciation Day; in 1989, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Dr. Max C. Butler conceived of an idea to honor science teachers |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | and appointed a blue ribbon committee on science and scientific |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | affairs, which led to the creation of a Science Teacher of the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Year award; today, this honor recognizes the outstanding |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | elementary, middle, and high school teachers who share their |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | energy and enthusiasm for science through creative and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | innovative methods to cultivate student interest in medicine and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | science; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1998, Dr. and Mrs. Ernest C. Butler, longtime |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | supporters of the science teacher award program, established an |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | endowment through the Texas Medical Association Foundation; to |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | date, the association has honored nearly 200 outstanding science |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | teachers with awards totaling more than $408,000; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The monetary value of the awards for 2017 is |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | $60,500; the funds will be disbursed to deserving teachers so |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | that they have the opportunity to enhance their teaching methods |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and advance their schools' science curriculum; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Science teachers play an essential role in the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | development of future physicians, scientists, and researchers, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | andtheButlers'contributionstowardeducationalexcellence |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | have earned them the respect and appreciation of the educational |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | community and Texans across the state; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature, hereby commend Dr. and Mrs. Ernest C. Butler and the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Texas Medical Association on their commitment to science |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | education and extend to all best wishes for a productive and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | rewarding Texas Medical Association Ernest and Sarah Butler |
