SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 715 WHEREAS, J. C. Penney Corporation is celebrating its 100th anniversary of doing business in the Lone Star State on March 31, 2017; and WHEREAS, One of the nation's oldest and best-known retailers, J. C. Penney was founded by James Cash Penney in Kemmerer, Wyoming, in 1902; today, the modern stores that bear Mr. Penney's name serve customers in more than 1,000 locations across the nation; and WHEREAS, The rich legacy of J. C. Penney in Texas dates to March 31, 1917, when the company opened a location in downtown Wichita Falls; and WHEREAS, Despite a fire and a tornado having destroyed the store twice, the company was undaunted and rebuilt each time, and the store has remained in operation in Wichita Falls ever since; and WHEREAS, Since 1992, Texas has also been home to J. C. Penney's corporate headquarters, located in Plano, and the company boasts approximately 100 J. C. Penney stores across the state, representing approximately a tenth of the company's stores; and WHEREAS, For 100 years, J. C. Penney has been serving customers, creating jobs, and contributing to the vitality of the retail industry in Texas, and it is truly deserving of special recognition on this momentous occasion; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of J. C. Penney in Texas and extend to the company and its employees sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the J. C. Penney Corporation as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
