2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The 300th anniversary of the founding of San |

3 | 3 | | Antonio is being commemorated in 2018; and |
---|
4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, San Antonio's roots can be traced back to an |
---|
5 | 5 | | encampment known by local indigenous people as Yanaguana, which |
---|
6 | 6 | | meant "the clear water" in their native language; in the late |
---|
7 | 7 | | 1600s, Spanish explorers traveled through the area and gave it |
---|
8 | 8 | | the name San Antonio de Padua; the site, located halfway between |
---|
9 | 9 | | northern Mexico and Spanish settlements in East Texas, was |
---|
10 | 10 | | subsequently chosen by Spanish authorities for the establishment |
---|
11 | 11 | | of a permanent community; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, On May 1, 1718, Martín de Alarcón, the governor of |
---|
13 | 13 | | Coahuila y Tejas, and Fray Antonio de San Buenaventura y Olivares |
---|
14 | 14 | | founded Mission San Antonio de Valero west of San Pedro Springs; |
---|
15 | 15 | | moved several times before its present site was chosen in 1724, |
---|
16 | 16 | | the mission would later become a fortress known as the Alamo; on |
---|
17 | 17 | | May 5, 1718, the Spaniards also established a garrison, the |
---|
18 | 18 | | Presidio San Antonio de Béjar, to protect the new mission, and |
---|
19 | 19 | | the soldiers' families composed a rudimentary civilian |
---|
20 | 20 | | settlement; four other missions were planted in the area over the |
---|
21 | 21 | | next decade and a half, and when a group of Canary Islanders |
---|
22 | 22 | | arrived in 1731, the civilian settlement was organized as a |
---|
23 | 23 | | villa, San Fernando de Béjar; the only town in Texas to enjoy |
---|
24 | 24 | | municipal status during Spanish rule, San Fernando became the |
---|
25 | 25 | | capital of Texas in 1773; following the Texas Revolution, San |
---|
26 | 26 | | Antonio, as the town was now called, was chartered as the seat of |
---|
27 | 27 | | Bexar County; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, With the advent of the city's 300th anniversary in |
---|
29 | 29 | | 2018, the San Antonio Tricentennial Celebration Commission has |
---|
30 | 30 | | partnered with hundreds of local organizations to plan a year of |
---|
31 | 31 | | festivities that emphasize history and education, community |
---|
32 | 32 | | service, and arts and culture, all culminating in a week of |
---|
33 | 33 | | commemorative events; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, For three centuries, the Alamo City has played a |
---|
35 | 35 | | central role in the story of the Lone Star State, and it is a |
---|
36 | 36 | | pleasure to join its residents in celebrating this notable |
---|
37 | 37 | | milestone as they continue to build an even brighter future; now, |
---|
38 | 38 | | therefore, be it |

39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 300th anniversary of the |
---|
41 | 41 | | founding of San Antonio and extend to its citizens sincere best |
---|
42 | 42 | | wishes for a memorable and meaningful tricentennial celebration; |
