11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 760
22 WHEREAS, The 300th anniversary of the founding of San
33 Antonio is being commemorated in 2018; and
44 WHEREAS, San Antonio's roots can be traced back to an
55 encampment known by local indigenous people as Yanaguana, which
66 meant "the clear water" in their native language; in the late
77 1600s, Spanish explorers traveled through the area and gave it
88 the name San Antonio de Padua; the site, located halfway between
99 northern Mexico and Spanish settlements in East Texas, was
1010 subsequently chosen by Spanish authorities for the establishment
1111 of a permanent community; and
1212 WHEREAS, On May 1, 1718, Martín de Alarcón, the governor of
1313 Coahuila y Tejas, and Fray Antonio de San Buenaventura y Olivares
1414 founded Mission San Antonio de Valero west of San Pedro Springs;
1515 moved several times before its present site was chosen in 1724,
1616 the mission would later become a fortress known as the Alamo; on
1717 May 5, 1718, the Spaniards also established a garrison, the
1818 Presidio San Antonio de Béjar, to protect the new mission, and
1919 the soldiers' families composed a rudimentary civilian
2020 settlement; four other missions were planted in the area over the
2121 next decade and a half, and when a group of Canary Islanders
2222 arrived in 1731, the civilian settlement was organized as a
2323 villa, San Fernando de Béjar; the only town in Texas to enjoy
2424 municipal status during Spanish rule, San Fernando became the
2525 capital of Texas in 1773; following the Texas Revolution, San
2626 Antonio, as the town was now called, was chartered as the seat of
2727 Bexar County; and
2828 WHEREAS, With the advent of the city's 300th anniversary in
2929 2018, the San Antonio Tricentennial Celebration Commission has
3030 partnered with hundreds of local organizations to plan a year of
3131 festivities that emphasize history and education, community
3232 service, and arts and culture, all culminating in a week of
3333 commemorative events; and
3434 WHEREAS, For three centuries, the Alamo City has played a
3535 central role in the story of the Lone Star State, and it is a
3636 pleasure to join its residents in celebrating this notable
3737 milestone as they continue to build an even brighter future; now,
3838 therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4040 Legislature, hereby commemorate the 300th anniversary of the
4141 founding of San Antonio and extend to its citizens sincere best
4242 wishes for a memorable and meaningful tricentennial celebration;
4343 and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4545 the City of San Antonio as an expression of high regard from the
4646 Texas Senate.
