5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the |

6 | 6 | | passing of Bertha Cuellar Gonzalez of San Antonio on January 16, |
---|
7 | 7 | | 2017, at the age of 99; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Lino Edward Cuellar and Francisca |
---|
9 | 9 | | Flores Cuellar, the former Bertha Cuellar was born in Floresville |
---|
10 | 10 | | on November 21, 1917; she moved with her family to San Antonio as |
---|
11 | 11 | | a young girl and went on to graduate from Brackenridge High |
---|
12 | 12 | | School; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, She married Henry B. Gonzalez in 1940, and the couple |
---|
14 | 14 | | became the proud parents of four sons, Henry, Charles, Stephen, |
---|
15 | 15 | | and Frank, and four daughters, Rose Mary, Bertha, Genevieve, and |
---|
16 | 16 | | Anna; when her children were young, Mrs. Gonzalez was active in |
---|
17 | 17 | | the PTA and served as a Cub Scout den mother; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, While raising her family, Mrs. Gonzalez also |
---|
19 | 19 | | shone as "campaigner in chief" for her husband, who became the |
---|
20 | 20 | | state's first Mexican American congressman; she shared his deep |
---|
21 | 21 | | commitment to social justice and played a crucial role in his |
---|
22 | 22 | | long career in public service, providing wise counsel as well as |
---|
23 | 23 | | tireless support; he often referred to her as his "secret |
---|
24 | 24 | | weapon"; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Gonzalez was happiest with a house full of |
---|
26 | 26 | | people, especially youngsters, and she rejoiced in a large family |
---|
27 | 27 | | that grew to include 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; |
---|
28 | 28 | | following the death of Congressman Gonzalez in November 2000, |
---|
29 | 29 | | Mrs. Gonzalez demonstrated tremendous grace and resilience, and |
---|
30 | 30 | | she continued to form many new friendships as a resident of a |
---|
31 | 31 | | senior community; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Although she never sought the spotlight, Bertha |
---|
33 | 33 | | Gonzalez made a lasting, positive difference in her community and |
---|
34 | 34 | | beyond, and those who were fortunate enough to share in the |
---|
35 | 35 | | richness of her life will forever cherish their memories of her |
---|
36 | 36 | | warmth, her selfless dedication to her family, and her wonderful |
---|
37 | 37 | | sense of humor; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
39 | 39 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Bertha Cuellar |
---|
40 | 40 | | Gonzalez and extend sincere condolences to all those who mourn |
---|
41 | 41 | | her passing; and, be it further |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

43 | 43 | | her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do |
