SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 801
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Luca, who has been nominated for a 2017 American Humane
Hero Dog Award in the Search and Rescue category for his heroic
actions on behalf of the Fort Worth Police Department on April
15, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Luca began search-and-rescue training as a young
puppy under the guidance of Officer Cole Brock; the pair lived in
Salt Lake City, Utah, and Luca served in a division of Rocky
Mountain Rescue Dogs for about seven years before retiring; they
later moved to Fort Worth, where Officer Brock joined the police
force and Luca continued to enjoy his retirement years; and
WHEREAS, On April 15, 2016, a search-and-rescue operation
for a missing elderly man in Fort Worth began to stall, and Fort
Worth Police Department sergeant Luis Medrano asked Officer
Brock if they could bring Luca out of retirement to assist in the
search; despite his years in retirement and his own ailing
health, the canine first responder was eager to take a helicopter
ride and join in the search; he soon alerted the rescue team to an
opening in the brush near the West Fork of the Trinity River,
where the missing man, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, was
stuck waist-deep in mud and cold and fast-moving water; and
WHEREAS, Had Luca not tracked the victim's trail and
located him, the man could have very likely drowned; soon after
Luca alerted the team, officers were able to bring the endangered
man to safety and out of the rugged terrain; and
WHEREAS, Luca is an incredibly gifted and courageous dog, and
he helped save the lives of countless citizens over the course of
his search-and-rescue career; he is indeed deserving of recognition
for his most recent accomplishment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
Legislature, hereby commend Luca for his life-saving actions and
congratulate him on being nominated for an American Humane Hero
Dog Award; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in his
honor and as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
