| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Luca, who has been nominated for a 2017 American Humane |

| 4 | 4 | | Hero Dog Award in the Search and Rescue category for his heroic |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | actions on behalf of the Fort Worth Police Department on April |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | 15, 2016; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Luca began search-and-rescue training as a young |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | puppy under the guidance of Officer Cole Brock; the pair lived in |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Salt Lake City, Utah, and Luca served in a division of Rocky |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Mountain Rescue Dogs for about seven years before retiring; they |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | later moved to Fort Worth, where Officer Brock joined the police |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | force and Luca continued to enjoy his retirement years; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, On April 15, 2016, a search-and-rescue operation |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | for a missing elderly man in Fort Worth began to stall, and Fort |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Worth Police Department sergeant Luis Medrano asked Officer |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Brock if they could bring Luca out of retirement to assist in the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | search; despite his years in retirement and his own ailing |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | health, the canine first responder was eager to take a helicopter |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | ride and join in the search; he soon alerted the rescue team to an |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | opening in the brush near the West Fork of the Trinity River, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | where the missing man, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, was |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | stuck waist-deep in mud and cold and fast-moving water; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Had Luca not tracked the victim's trail and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | located him, the man could have very likely drowned; soon after |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Luca alerted the team, officers were able to bring the endangered |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | man to safety and out of the rugged terrain; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Luca is an incredibly gifted and courageous dog, and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | he helped save the lives of countless citizens over the course of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | his search-and-rescue career; he is indeed deserving of recognition |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | for his most recent accomplishment; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature, hereby commend Luca for his life-saving actions and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | congratulate him on being nominated for an American Humane Hero |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Dog Award; and, be it further |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in his |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | honor and as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
