1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 802
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize Dr. and Mrs. Philip Wales, the first married couple to
4	4	be honored with memorial plaques at the Admiral Nimitz Museum in
5	5	the National Museum of the Pacific War; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The Admiral Nimitz Museum was established in
7	7	Fredericksburg to honor Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz and those
8	8	who served under him in the Pacific Theater of World War II; in
9	9	the last 50 years, the museum has honored thousands of veterans
10	10	who fought bravely in defense of the nation; and
11	11	WHEREAS, Dr. Philip Wales joined the United States Navy in
12	12	1942, and he primarily served on the Pacific Island of Ulithi; as
13	13	a medical officer, he provided care for United States Marines and
14	14	for the indigenous people of the island, and he treated men
15	15	returning from infamous battles, such as Guadalcanal and Iwo
16	16	Jima; he retired from military service with the rank of captain
17	17	in 1974; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Mary Elizabeth Schneider joined the United States
19	19	Army Nursing Corps in 1944; she cared for innumerable servicemen
20	20	who were recovering from warzone injuries at facilities in
21	21	Galveston, and she retired from the nursing corps in 1947; and
22	22	WHEREAS, Dr. Wales and Elizabeth Schneider met in the early
23	23	1950s, when he was struck by appendicitis and she provided his
24	24	nursing care; they were married on May 1, 1952, and today, they
25	25	are revered residents of Lockhart, Texas; the devoted couple was
26	26	honored as a husband-and-wife team on March 18, 2017, at the
27	27	Admiral Nimitz Museum for their individual contributions to the
28	28	United States War effort; now, therefore, be it
29	29	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
30	30	Legislature, hereby commend Dr. and Mrs. Philip Wales for their
31	31	distinguished service to the nation and congratulate them on
32	32	being honored together at the Admiral Nimitz Museum as true
33	33	American heroes; and, be it further
34	34	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
35	35	them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
