11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 820
22 WHEREAS, July 4, 2017, represents the centennial of the
33 first landing by an aircraft at Mineola-Wisener Field Airport in
44 Wood County; and
55 WHEREAS, On the Fourth of July, 1917, Lieutenant Ralph W.
66 Stone of the United States Army Signal Corps landed his Curtiss
77 JN-4 "Jenny" biplane at what was then known as Massingale Meadow,
88 proving the field's suitability as an emergency landing site
99 between Love Field in Dallas and a military base in Shreveport,
1010 Louisiana; witnessing this first landing was a 12-year-old local
1111 farm boy named Robert Henry Wisener Jr.; and
1212 WHEREAS, Over the next few years, the field was used by
1313 such pioneer aviators as Wiley Post, who was the first man to fly
1414 solo around the world, and Hollywood stunt pilot Roy Wilson, who
1515 in the summer of 1923 taught Henry Wisener how to fly; in 1926,
1616 Mr. Wisener leased the site, renamed it Royal Field, and began
1717 providing flight lessons, aircraft repairs, and aircraft fuel;
1818 together with his brother, Bryce, he also established the Royal
1919 Flying Circus, which offered airplane rides and performed
2020 aerobatics; and
2121 WHEREAS, In 1941, Henry Wisener bought the site and 50
2222 adjacent acres and lengthened the runway to accommodate newer
2323 aircraft, and after World War II, the brothers added an aircraft
2424 repair shop, a classroom, a flight office, and a beacon tower;
2525 from 1963 to 1983, the airport was leased to the City of Mineola
2626 and called Mineola Municipal Airport, and since 1983, it has been
2727 known as Mineola-Wisener Field Airport; and
2828 WHEREAS, Over the years, this historic airfield and the
2929 family behind it have been honored on a number of occasions;
3030 Charles Lindbergh presented the airport in 1928 with a
3131 certificate from the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of
3232 Aeronautics, and the Texas Historical Commission has conferred
3333 on the airport both an Official Texas Historical Marker and a
3434 Texas Treasure Business Award; on May 2, 1980, the city of
3535 Mineola celebrated Henry and Bryce Wisener Day, in recognition of
3636 their contributions to American and Wood County aviation; today,
3737 the site of the airport is also home to the Royal Flying Circus
3838 Aviation Museum and to a chapter of the Experimental Aircraft
3939 Association; and
4040 WHEREAS, Still owned by the Wisener family, the
4141 Mineola-Wisener Field Airport is the oldest privately held
4242 public-use airport in Texas and the home base of more than 70
4343 aircraft, and it continues to support the local economy and to
4444 contribute to the rich history of aviation in the Lone Star
4545 State; now, therefore, be it
4646 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4747 Legislature, hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
4848 first landing at Mineola-Wisener Field Airport and extend to the
4949 Wisener family and to everyone associated with the airport
5050 sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
5151 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5252 Mineola-Wisener Field Airport as an expression of high regard
5353 from the Texas Senate.
