1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 820
2	2	WHEREAS, July 4, 2017, represents the centennial of the
3	3	first landing by an aircraft at Mineola-Wisener Field Airport in
4	4	Wood County; and
5	5	WHEREAS, On the Fourth of July, 1917, Lieutenant Ralph W.
6	6	Stone of the United States Army Signal Corps landed his Curtiss
7	7	JN-4 "Jenny" biplane at what was then known as Massingale Meadow,
8	8	proving the field's suitability as an emergency landing site
9	9	between Love Field in Dallas and a military base in Shreveport,
10	10	Louisiana; witnessing this first landing was a 12-year-old local
11	11	farm boy named Robert Henry Wisener Jr.; and
12	12	WHEREAS, Over the next few years, the field was used by
13	13	such pioneer aviators as Wiley Post, who was the first man to fly
14	14	solo around the world, and Hollywood stunt pilot Roy Wilson, who
15	15	in the summer of 1923 taught Henry Wisener how to fly; in 1926,
16	16	Mr. Wisener leased the site, renamed it Royal Field, and began
17	17	providing flight lessons, aircraft repairs, and aircraft fuel;
18	18	together with his brother, Bryce, he also established the Royal
19	19	Flying Circus, which offered airplane rides and performed
20	20	aerobatics; and
21	21	WHEREAS, In 1941, Henry Wisener bought the site and 50
22	22	adjacent acres and lengthened the runway to accommodate newer
23	23	aircraft, and after World War II, the brothers added an aircraft
24	24	repair shop, a classroom, a flight office, and a beacon tower;
25	25	from 1963 to 1983, the airport was leased to the City of Mineola
26	26	and called Mineola Municipal Airport, and since 1983, it has been
27	27	known as Mineola-Wisener Field Airport; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Over the years, this historic airfield and the
29	29	family behind it have been honored on a number of occasions;
30	30	Charles Lindbergh presented the airport in 1928 with a
31	31	certificate from the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of
32	32	Aeronautics, and the Texas Historical Commission has conferred
33	33	on the airport both an Official Texas Historical Marker and a
34	34	Texas Treasure Business Award; on May 2, 1980, the city of
35	35	Mineola celebrated Henry and Bryce Wisener Day, in recognition of
36	36	their contributions to American and Wood County aviation; today,
37	37	the site of the airport is also home to the Royal Flying Circus
38	38	Aviation Museum and to a chapter of the Experimental Aircraft
39	39	Association; and
40	40	WHEREAS, Still owned by the Wisener family, the
41	41	Mineola-Wisener Field Airport is the oldest privately held
42	42	public-use airport in Texas and the home base of more than 70
43	43	aircraft, and it continues to support the local economy and to
44	44	contribute to the rich history of aviation in the Lone Star
45	45	State; now, therefore, be it
46	46	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
47	47	Legislature, hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
48	48	first landing at Mineola-Wisener Field Airport and extend to the
49	49	Wisener family and to everyone associated with the airport
50	50	sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
51	51	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
52	52	Mineola-Wisener Field Airport as an expression of high regard
53	53	from the Texas Senate.
