11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 83
22 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Palo Pinto County are
33 gathering in Austin on January 31, 2017, to celebrate the first
44 Palo Pinto County Day at the State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Named for one of its principal streams and
66 situated in the Western Cross Timbers Ecoregion, Palo Pinto
77 County covers 948 square miles of rugged, hilly land drained by
88 the Brazos River; the Texas Legislature formed the county in
99 1856, and Golconda, the county seat, was renamed Palo Pinto two
1010 years later; and
1111 WHEREAS, Early settlers of Palo Pinto County included
1212 Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving, of the famed
1313 Goodnight-Loving Trail, who established cattle ranches in the
1414 area; in the late 1800s, the county's economy centered on
1515 livestock, and a meeting of area ranchers in 1876 led to the
1616 creation of what is now known as the Texas and Southwestern
1717 Cattle Raisers Association; over the years, oil and natural gas
1818 production helped to diversify the local economy, and the county
1919 has also developed a robust tourist industry with such
2020 attractions as Lake Palo Pinto, Possum Kingdom Lake, and Lake
2121 Mineral Wells State Park; and
2222 WHEREAS, The community of Palo Pinto is home to the Old
2323 Jail, built in 1880, which now serves as a museum complex and
2424 hosts a variety of events, including the annual Frontier Days and
2525 Old Settlers Reunion; and
2626 WHEREAS, The largest city in Palo Pinto County is Mineral
2727 Wells, which was first settled in 1877 by James and Amanda Lynch;
2828 afterdiggingawell,thecouplefoundthattheunusual-tasting
2929 water seemed beneficial to their health, and in 1885, the Crazy
3030 Well was dug and the town gained popularity as a center for
3131 wellness and recreation; today, the city remains a notable
3232 attraction for retirees and tourists alike, and citizens pay
3333 tribute to their heritage with the annual Crazy Water Festival;
3434 Mineral Wells is also the site of the Baker Hotel, which was
3535 frequented in its heyday by notable Hollywood stars, including
3636 Ronald Reagan, Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Judy Garland, Will
3737 Rogers, and the Three Stooges; and
3838 WHEREAS, The people of Palo Pinto County take great pride
3939 in their rich history as they work together to build an even
4040 brighter future, and it is indeed a privilege to honor them and
4141 their unique region of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4343 Legislature, hereby recognize January 31, 2017, as Palo Pinto
4444 County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting
4545 delegation sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable
4646 stay in Austin.
