3 | 3 | | gathering in Austin on January 31, 2017, to celebrate the first |

4 | 4 | | Palo Pinto County Day at the State Capitol; and |

5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Named for one of its principal streams and |
---|
6 | 6 | | situated in the Western Cross Timbers Ecoregion, Palo Pinto |
---|
7 | 7 | | County covers 948 square miles of rugged, hilly land drained by |
---|
8 | 8 | | the Brazos River; the Texas Legislature formed the county in |
---|
9 | 9 | | 1856, and Golconda, the county seat, was renamed Palo Pinto two |
---|
10 | 10 | | years later; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Early settlers of Palo Pinto County included |
---|
12 | 12 | | Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving, of the famed |
---|
13 | 13 | | Goodnight-Loving Trail, who established cattle ranches in the |
---|
14 | 14 | | area; in the late 1800s, the county's economy centered on |
---|
15 | 15 | | livestock, and a meeting of area ranchers in 1876 led to the |
---|
16 | 16 | | creation of what is now known as the Texas and Southwestern |
---|
17 | 17 | | Cattle Raisers Association; over the years, oil and natural gas |
---|
18 | 18 | | production helped to diversify the local economy, and the county |
---|
19 | 19 | | has also developed a robust tourist industry with such |
---|
20 | 20 | | attractions as Lake Palo Pinto, Possum Kingdom Lake, and Lake |
---|
21 | 21 | | Mineral Wells State Park; and |

22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The community of Palo Pinto is home to the Old |
---|
23 | 23 | | Jail, built in 1880, which now serves as a museum complex and |
---|
24 | 24 | | hosts a variety of events, including the annual Frontier Days and |
---|
25 | 25 | | Old Settlers Reunion; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The largest city in Palo Pinto County is Mineral |
---|
27 | 27 | | Wells, which was first settled in 1877 by James and Amanda Lynch; |
---|
28 | 28 | | afterdiggingawell,thecouplefoundthattheunusual-tasting |
---|
29 | 29 | | water seemed beneficial to their health, and in 1885, the Crazy |
---|
30 | 30 | | Well was dug and the town gained popularity as a center for |
---|
31 | 31 | | wellness and recreation; today, the city remains a notable |
---|
32 | 32 | | attraction for retirees and tourists alike, and citizens pay |
---|
33 | 33 | | tribute to their heritage with the annual Crazy Water Festival; |

34 | 34 | | Mineral Wells is also the site of the Baker Hotel, which was |

35 | 35 | | frequented in its heyday by notable Hollywood stars, including |
---|
36 | 36 | | Ronald Reagan, Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Judy Garland, Will |

37 | 37 | | Rogers, and the Three Stooges; and |

38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, The people of Palo Pinto County take great pride |

39 | 39 | | in their rich history as they work together to build an even |

40 | 40 | | brighter future, and it is indeed a privilege to honor them and |

41 | 41 | | their unique region of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |

42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |

43 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby recognize January 31, 2017, as Palo Pinto |

44 | 44 | | County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |

45 | 45 | | delegation sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable |
