| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|---|
| 3 | 3 | | recognize the Brenham Fire Department on the occasion of its |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | 150th anniversary; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Brenham Fire Department was created by city |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | ordinance on June 10, 1867, to help protect citizens and property |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | during the tumultuous time of Reconstruction; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In its early years, the department oversaw the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | operations of several independent fire companies, each of which |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | sent delegates to serve the department and to elect its chief and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | assistants; in 1911, the local fire companies joined together to |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | form the Brenham Fire Company No. 1, and in 1963, the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | organization was rechartered under its present name; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The Brenham Fire Department has played a key role |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | in several local traditions that have helped to define the spirit |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | of the Brenham community; the department facilitated the city's |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | annual Maifest celebration for more than 50 years, and it is also |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | credited with initiating the Washington County Fair, one of the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | oldest county fairs in Texas; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, the Brenham Fire Department has |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | evolved to meet the changing needs of the times; today, its 18 |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | staff members and 36 volunteers continue to protect the lives and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | property of Brenham residents with unwavering courage and a deep |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | commitment to public service; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Legislature, hereby commend all associated with the Brenham Fire |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Department for their many contributions to the city and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | congratulate them on the department's 150th anniversary; and, be |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | it further |

| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

| 31 | 31 | | the department as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
