SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 850 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize San Marcos Primitive Baptist Church in Luling on the auspicious occasion of its 164th anniversary; and WHEREAS, Named for its proximity to the San Marcos River, San Marcos Primitive Baptist Church was established on April 30, 1853, by charter members William Baker, Vashti Baker, Hannah Daniels, I. D. Owen, and Sylvanna Daniels; around 1869, the original church was destroyed in a flash flood, and the current sanctuary was constructed in 1886; and WHEREAS, Over the years, the church has ministered faithfully to the needs of innumerable Christians; it has been an invaluable source of strength for members in times of hardship and bereavement and a source of fellowship in times of prosperity and celebration; and WHEREAS, Under the guidance and wise stewardship of its pastors and under the outstanding leadership of its current pastor, Elder Phil Nigh, the church has continued to grow and to undertake many worthy projects in the community; and WHEREAS, San Marcos Primitive Baptist Church is one of the oldest churches in Texas, and it was honored with an Official Texas Historical Marker in May of 1985; congregants celebrated the church's 164th anniversary with a special ceremony on May 6, 2017; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the clergy and members of San Marcos Primitive Baptist Church on the joyous occasion of its 164th anniversary; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
