SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 854 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins concerned individuals, community and faith leaders, veterans, Texas families, and organizations across the state in observing National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 2, 2017; and WHEREAS, Gun violence is a public safety concern, and the organizations calling for increased public safety in Texas and across the country include Texas Gun Sense, Mom's Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, and Everytown for Gun Safety; and WHEREAS, Protecting the public safety of the people of Texas is of great importance, and many organizations and agencies are involved in this vital mission, which includes addressing the rising number of gun-related deaths, a toll that includes suicides, accidents, and injuries of children, teens, and veterans; and WHEREAS, Texas leads the nation in the number of lost and stolen firearm reports, according to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; unsecured guns and stolen guns contribute to crime, put the personal and public safety of Texans at risk, and make the job of Texas law enforcement officers more difficult; and WHEREAS, Gun Violence Awareness Day provides an opportunity for citizens, community leaders, and organizations to recommit to exploring innovative ways of working together to help ensure the safety of the people of Texas by educating the public and raising awareness about suicide prevention and safe storage of firearms; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commend all those who work to keep the people of Texas safe and extend best wishes for a productive National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
