                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 856
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize Major General Lester Simpson, who has retired after
 more than 36 years of outstanding service with the United States
 Army National Guard; and
 WHEREAS, Major General Simpson was commissioned in 1980
 through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program at The
 University of Texas at Arlington; he holds a master's degree in
 Strategic Studies and is a graduate of the CAPSTONE General and
 Flag Officer Course in Washington, D.C.; and
 WHEREAS, Over the course of his distinguished military
 career, he held numerous leadership and command positions; he
 served as commander of the 3rd Battalion, 144th Infantry
 Regiment, and of the 142nd Rear Operations Center; in 2011, he
 commanded the 176th Engineer Brigade during major combat
 operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; and
 WHEREAS, He went on to serve as assistant adjutant general
 of the Texas Army National Guard, as special assistant to the
 director of the Army National Guard, and as commander of the 36th
 Infantry Division; his many awards and decorations include the
 Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Defense Meritorious
 Service Medal; and
 WHEREAS, An exemplary officer, he is respected and admired
 by his fellow officers and enlisted personnel alike, and it is
 truly fitting that he receive special recognition for his
 exceptional service to the nation; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
 Legislature, hereby commend Major General Lester Simpson on his
 exceptional service as an officer in the United States Army
 National Guard and extend to him best wishes for continued
 success in all his endeavors; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
