| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the American Red Cross South Texas Chapter on the |

| 4 | 4 | | occasion of its 100th anniversary; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The South Texas Chapter of the American Red Cross |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | was established in 1917; it serves the people of Hidalgo, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Cameron, Willacy, and Starr Counties through its health and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | safety programs and by its signature emphasis on providing |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | disaster relief; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, For more than 135 years, the American Red Cross |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | has played a key role in the nation's response to disasters; in |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | 2016 alone, Red Cross volunteers responded to 180 significant |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | incidents, including wildfires, storms, and floods; they opened |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | nearly 800 emergency shelters, served more than four million |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | meals and snacks, and distributed more than two million relief |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | items; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The American Red Cross is responsible for |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | maintaining 40 percent of the nation's blood supply; the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | organization also focuses on education, teaching valuable |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | life-saving techniques, and helping people learn how to better |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | prepare for and respond to natural disasters; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The South Texas Chapter of the American Red Cross |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | has had a profound impact on the lives of countless people |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | throughout the Rio Grande Valley, and it is truly fitting that it |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | receive special recognition as it reaches this milestone in its |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | history; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, hereby commend the board of directors, staff, and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | volunteers of the American Red Cross South Texas Chapter on their |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | commitment to public service and extend to them best wishes for |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | the future and congratulations on the organization's 100th |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | anniversary; and, be it further |

| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for this |
