55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Joseph Ray Perry, who died
77 April 27, 2017, at the age of 92; and
88 WHEREAS, Ray Perry was an exemplary citizen and a
99 hardworking West Texas farmer who loved his land and was
1010 dedicated to serving his community; and
1111 WHEREAS, He was born on April 23, 1925, in the Haskell
1212 County community of Paint Creek to Hoyt and Thelma Perry; a
1313 lifelong resident of Haskell County, he served the nation with
1414 distinction in the United States Army Air Corps during World War
1515 II; he flew 35 missions over Nazi Germany as a tail gunner in B-17
1616 bombers, and he was awarded multiple medals for his exemplary
1717 service; and
1818 WHEREAS, He married Amelia June Holt at the Haskell
1919 Methodist Church on June 29, 1948, and the couple enjoyed nearly
2020 70 years of marriage together; they raised two children, Milla
2121 Perry Jones and James Richard "Rick" Perry, and they were blessed
2222 with three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and
2323 WHEREAS, In addition to working his land, Ray Perry was
2424 active in a wide range of political and community endeavors; he
2525 served for nearly 30 years as a Haskell County commissioner and
2626 for 10 years as a member of the Paint Creek school board; he
2727 served for six years on the West Central Texas Council of
2828 Governments, and he was instrumental in the creation of the Paint
2929 Creek Water Corporation and twice served as its president; and
3030 WHEREAS, An avid hunter and outdoorsman, he was known for
3131 his numerous wild game trophies; one of the highlights of his
3232 hunting trips was killing an Alaskan first-class caribou that has
3333 been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records; and
3434 WHEREAS, Ray Perry was a man of courage, faith, and
3535 patriotism; he gave unselfishly to others and to his community,
3636 and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be
3737 forgotten by those who were privileged to share in his life; and
3838 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
3939 and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by
4040 his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4242 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4343 family of Joseph Ray Perry; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4545 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4646 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4747 memory of Joseph Ray Perry.
