| 4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, The Texas State Artist designations are awarded |

| 5 | 5 | | to a select group of individuals to honor the exceptional |

| 6 | 6 | | quality of their work and their outstanding commitment to the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | arts in Texas; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Poteet and raised in San Antonio, George |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Strait revitalized traditional country music when he emerged on |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the national scene in the 1980s with such hits as "Fool Hearted |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Memory" and "If You're Thinking You Want a Stranger"; as |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Nashville moved toward pop over the next decade, he stayed true |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | to Texas honky-tonk and Western swing and continued his reign at |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the top of the charts, impervious to trends; the only artist to |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | have a Top 10 hit every year for over three decades, he has |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | released an unsurpassed 60 No. 1 singles, and with 33 platinum or |

| 17 | 17 | | multiplatinum albums, he ranks behind only the Beatles and Elvis |

| 18 | 18 | | Presley in sales; and |

| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, A recipient of the prestigious National Medal of |

| 20 | 20 | | the Arts, Mr. Strait holds more Country Music Association awards |

| 35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate George Strait on his selection |

| 36 | 36 | | as the 2017 State Musician and extend to him sincere best wishes |
