2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize the members of the Williams-Livingston family on the |
---|
4 | 4 | | grand occasion of their annual family reunion, which is being |
---|
5 | 5 | | held June 2 and 3, 2017, in Kirvin; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Every year on the first Saturday in June, members |
---|
7 | 7 | | of the Williams-Livingston family hold a reunion to celebrate |
---|
8 | 8 | | their heritage and to commemorate the birth of Mamie Elizabeth |
---|
9 | 9 | | "Mama Mae" Williams; they invite friends and family members from |
---|
10 | 10 | | across Texas, the United States, and Canada to share their |
---|
11 | 11 | | celebration of family love and unity, religious roots, and |
---|
12 | 12 | | community; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Family history reveals that the Charles |
---|
14 | 14 | | Livingston family moved from Virginia as freed slaves and arrived |
---|
15 | 15 | | in the Freestone County area in the early 1800s; the family |
---|
16 | 16 | | settled in the area known as Cotton Gin and sharecropped on |
---|
17 | 17 | | various local farms; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Caroline Livingston's family moved from Alabama |
---|
19 | 19 | | to Kirvin in Freestone County, arriving in covered wagons, on |
---|
20 | 20 | | foot, and on horseback; they settled on the Alfred Carter farm |
---|
21 | 21 | | and worked his land; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Caroline and Charles Livingston's children, |
---|
23 | 23 | | Elbert Jefferson, Fannie, Foster, Elizabeth "Mama Lizzie," and |
---|
24 | 24 | | Callie, supported their community and were instrumental in |
---|
25 | 25 | | establishing Woods Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, which is |
---|
26 | 26 | | still an active church today; they also helped create a public |
---|
27 | 27 | | school system for their children and for the children from |
---|
28 | 28 | | surrounding communities; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Williams-Livingston family who |
---|
30 | 30 | | host the annual reunion are the descendants of Caroline and |
---|
31 | 31 | | Charles Livingston's daughter Elizabeth "Mama Lizzie" |
---|
32 | 32 | | Livingston; born July 2, 1866, she married Austin "Pop Aus" |
---|
33 | 33 | | Williams, a freed slave from Tennessee, and the couple had 10 |
---|
34 | 34 | | children, one of whom was Mamie Elizabeth "Mama Mae" Williams, |
---|
35 | 35 | | who was born June 1, 1889; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of her long life, Mamie Elizabeth |
---|
37 | 37 | | Williams became the matriarch of the Williams-Livingston family; |
---|
38 | 38 | | she died in 1987 at the age of 98; her only living child, Cathelyn |
---|
39 | 39 | | Francis Dawson Butcher, carries on her legacy and her love of |
---|
40 | 40 | | family; and |
---|
41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, The branch of the family extending from "Mama Mae" |
---|
42 | 42 | | has successfully worked to reconnect with other branches of the |
---|
43 | 43 | | family from across the state and nation, and today, more new |
---|
44 | 44 | | family members attend each reunion; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, Williams-Livingston family members are |
---|
46 | 46 | | successful men and women who have contributed greatly to their |
---|
47 | 47 | | communities through their leadership, their professionalism and |
---|
48 | 48 | | entrepreneurial spirit, and their concern for others; they are |
---|
49 | 49 | | exemplary citizens who believe strongly in tradition and who |
---|
50 | 50 | | instill in their children the values of love, family, and hard |
---|
51 | 51 | | work; and |
---|
52 | 52 | | WHEREAS, The Williams-Livingston family reunion is a time |
---|
53 | 53 | | to share memories, to recognize family members who have reached |
---|
54 | 54 | | important milestones, and to honor new additions to the family |
---|
55 | 55 | | and those who passed away since the previous reunion; now, |
---|
56 | 56 | | therefore, be it |
---|
57 | 57 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
58 | 58 | | Legislature, hereby extend to the members of the |
---|
59 | 59 | | Williams-Livingston family best wishes for a joyous and |
---|
60 | 60 | | memorable family reunion and recognize June 3, 2017, as |
---|
61 | 61 | | Williams-Livingston Day in this state; and, be it further |
---|
62 | 62 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
63 | 63 | | the family as a memento of this special occasion. |
