11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 877
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the members of the Williams-Livingston family on the
44 grand occasion of their annual family reunion, which is being
55 held June 2 and 3, 2017, in Kirvin; and
66 WHEREAS, Every year on the first Saturday in June, members
77 of the Williams-Livingston family hold a reunion to celebrate
88 their heritage and to commemorate the birth of Mamie Elizabeth
99 "Mama Mae" Williams; they invite friends and family members from
1010 across Texas, the United States, and Canada to share their
1111 celebration of family love and unity, religious roots, and
1212 community; and
1313 WHEREAS, Family history reveals that the Charles
1414 Livingston family moved from Virginia as freed slaves and arrived
1515 in the Freestone County area in the early 1800s; the family
1616 settled in the area known as Cotton Gin and sharecropped on
1717 various local farms; and
1818 WHEREAS, Caroline Livingston's family moved from Alabama
1919 to Kirvin in Freestone County, arriving in covered wagons, on
2020 foot, and on horseback; they settled on the Alfred Carter farm
2121 and worked his land; and
2222 WHEREAS, Caroline and Charles Livingston's children,
2323 Elbert Jefferson, Fannie, Foster, Elizabeth "Mama Lizzie," and
2424 Callie, supported their community and were instrumental in
2525 establishing Woods Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, which is
2626 still an active church today; they also helped create a public
2727 school system for their children and for the children from
2828 surrounding communities; and
2929 WHEREAS, The members of the Williams-Livingston family who
3030 host the annual reunion are the descendants of Caroline and
3131 Charles Livingston's daughter Elizabeth "Mama Lizzie"
3232 Livingston; born July 2, 1866, she married Austin "Pop Aus"
3333 Williams, a freed slave from Tennessee, and the couple had 10
3434 children, one of whom was Mamie Elizabeth "Mama Mae" Williams,
3535 who was born June 1, 1889; and
3636 WHEREAS, Over the course of her long life, Mamie Elizabeth
3737 Williams became the matriarch of the Williams-Livingston family;
3838 she died in 1987 at the age of 98; her only living child, Cathelyn
3939 Francis Dawson Butcher, carries on her legacy and her love of
4040 family; and
4141 WHEREAS, The branch of the family extending from "Mama Mae"
4242 has successfully worked to reconnect with other branches of the
4343 family from across the state and nation, and today, more new
4444 family members attend each reunion; and
4545 WHEREAS, Williams-Livingston family members are
4646 successful men and women who have contributed greatly to their
4747 communities through their leadership, their professionalism and
4848 entrepreneurial spirit, and their concern for others; they are
4949 exemplary citizens who believe strongly in tradition and who
5050 instill in their children the values of love, family, and hard
5151 work; and
5252 WHEREAS, The Williams-Livingston family reunion is a time
5353 to share memories, to recognize family members who have reached
5454 important milestones, and to honor new additions to the family
5555 and those who passed away since the previous reunion; now,
5656 therefore, be it
5757 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
5858 Legislature, hereby extend to the members of the
5959 Williams-Livingston family best wishes for a joyous and
6060 memorable family reunion and recognize June 3, 2017, as
6161 Williams-Livingston Day in this state; and, be it further
6262 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
6363 the family as a memento of this special occasion.
