55 WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and
66 meaningful accomplishments remain to comfort the family and
77 friends of Barbara Diane Madden of Richardson, who passed away on
88 March 30, 2017, at the age of 74; and
99 WHEREAS, The former Barbara Szumachowski was born on
1010 November 15, 1942, in Schenectady, New York, to Stephen and
1111 Bernice Szumachowski; following her graduation from high school,
1212 she was accepted to Ellis Hospital Nursing School, and she soon
1313 thereafter met the love of her life, Jerry Madden, a cadet at West
1414 Point Military Academy; after finishing school, the couple
1515 exchanged wedding vows on June 20, 1965; and
1616 WHEREAS, While her husband continued his training in the
1717 military, Mrs. Madden began her nursing career at Ellis
1818 Hospital; the couple eventually relocated to Baumholder,
1919 Germany, where Mr. Madden was stationed, and Mrs. Madden worked
2020 on base as a school nurse at the German American School; when her
2121 husband was overseas in Vietnam, she returned stateside and
2222 devoted herself to raising their family, which grew to include
2323 three children, Jerry, Stephanie, and Kristina; and
2424 WHEREAS, The family moved to Richardson, Texas, in 1971,
2525 after the end of Mr. Madden's enlistment; embracing the Lone Star
2626 State as her new home, Mrs. Madden served as a nurse in the infant
2727 ward at Richardson Memorial Hospital before going on to work for
2828 morethan20yearsatHeritageManorNursingHome,andshecared
2929 for the residents there with the same compassion and sensitivity
3030 that she had shown throughout her career; and
3131 WHEREAS, A member of the Anne Armstrong Republican Women's
3232 Club and the Plano Republican Women's Club, Mrs. Madden also
3333 generously supported her husband as he served as the Collin
3434 County Republican Party chair and as a member of the Texas House
3535 of Representatives; she was a faithful congregant at Saint Mark
3636 the Evangelist Catholic Church in Plano, and she enjoyed watching
3737 old movies and decorating her home for every season; to her loved
3838 ones, she was always a pillar of strength, and she knew no greater
3939 happiness than spending time with her husband, children, and
4040 grandchildren; and
4141 WHEREAS, Barbara Madden led a caring and purposeful life,
4242 and she will forever be remembered with deep affection by all who
4343 held her close in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4545 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Barbara Diane
4646 Madden and extend sincere sympathy to all those who mourn her
4747 passing; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4949 her family as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
