55 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of Julian
66 E. Kastrop of Longview, who passed away on April 22, 2017, at the
77 age of 98; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in Sealy on September 29, 1918, "Hank" Kastrop
99 was raised in San Antonio and Houston; in 1941, he earned a
1010 bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering at The University of
1111 Texas at Austin, and he subsequently went to work for Humble Oil;
1212 during World War II, he received an officer's commission in the
1313 Naval Reserve, and he served for three years in the Pacific
1414 theater, rising to the rank of lieutenant; and
1515 WHEREAS, After returning to civilian life, Mr. Kastrop
1616 became engineering editor of World Oil magazine, and in 1955,
1717 he was appointed editor of Petroleum Engineer International
1818 magazine; during his 21-year tenure with that journal, he
1919 published numerous highly regarded technical papers on worldwide
2020 oil and gas operations, and he was a popular speaker on
2121 international oil and gas forecasts; in 1975, Mr. Kastrop joined
2222 Hydroseal Valve Company as a partner with his brother, Robert,
2323 who founded the enterprise; he played a key role in developing
2424 pressure-relief valves for the company and helped to grow the
2525 business into an international concern before retiring in 1988 as
2626 executive vice president; over the course of his distinguished
2727 career, Mr. Kastrop served as president of the International
2828 Petroleum Writers Association, as an officer of the Petroleum
2929 Engineers Club of Dallas, and as a board member of the Engineers
3030 Club of Dallas; he was also a lifelong member of the Society of
3131 Petroleum Engineers; and
3232 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan moved to Longview in 1976 and
3333 became an active member of that community; in addition to
3434 assisting with the organization of a homeowners association, he
3535 established a neighborhood volunteer fire department in 1978 and
3636 served as chief for nearly three decades; and
3737 WHEREAS, Mr. Kastrop was joined in matrimony for 49 years
3838 to Alice Middleton, and after her passing, he was fortunate
3939 enough to find love again with Shirley H. Kastrop, to whom he was
4040 married for 17 years, until her death in 2008; he was the loving
4141 father of two sons, Kye and Kenneth, as well as an affectionate
4242 stepfather to Joanne Abernathy and Lucy Maxwell; over the years,
4343 he was blessed with two granddaughters, Kristin and Kourtney,
4444 and three step-grandchildren, Cassandra, Justin, and Jacob; and
4545 WHEREAS, Hank Kastrop lived a life rich in personal and
4646 professional achievements, and he will forever be a source of
4747 inspiration to those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be it
4848 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4949 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Julian E. Kastrop
5050 and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and many friends;
5151 and, be it further
5252 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5353 his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
5454 so in memory of Hank Kastrop.
