4	4	Julian E. Kastrop
5	5	WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of Julian
6	6	E. Kastrop of Longview, who passed away on April 22, 2017, at the
7	7	age of 98; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Born in Sealy on September 29, 1918, "Hank" Kastrop
9	9	was raised in San Antonio and Houston; in 1941, he earned a
10	10	bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering at The University of
11	11	Texas at Austin, and he subsequently went to work for Humble Oil;
12	12	during World War II, he received an officer's commission in the
13	13	Naval Reserve, and he served for three years in the Pacific
14	14	theater, rising to the rank of lieutenant; and
15	15	WHEREAS, After returning to civilian life, Mr. Kastrop
16	16	became engineering editor of World Oil magazine, and in 1955,
17	17	he was appointed editor of Petroleum Engineer International
18	18	magazine; during his 21-year tenure with that journal, he
19	19	published numerous highly regarded technical papers on worldwide
20	20	oil and gas operations, and he was a popular speaker on
21	21	international oil and gas forecasts; in 1975, Mr. Kastrop joined
22	22	Hydroseal Valve Company as a partner with his brother, Robert,
23	23	who founded the enterprise; he played a key role in developing
24	24	pressure-relief valves for the company and helped to grow the
25	25	business into an international concern before retiring in 1988 as
26	26	executive vice president; over the course of his distinguished
27	27	career, Mr. Kastrop served as president of the International
28	28	Petroleum Writers Association, as an officer of the Petroleum
29	29	Engineers Club of Dallas, and as a board member of the Engineers
30	30	Club of Dallas; he was also a lifelong member of the Society of
31	31	Petroleum Engineers; and
32	32	WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan moved to Longview in 1976 and
33	33	became an active member of that community; in addition to
34	34	assisting with the organization of a homeowners association, he
35	35	established a neighborhood volunteer fire department in 1978 and
36	36	served as chief for nearly three decades; and
37	37	WHEREAS, Mr. Kastrop was joined in matrimony for 49 years
38	38	to Alice Middleton, and after her passing, he was fortunate
39	39	enough to find love again with Shirley H. Kastrop, to whom he was
40	40	married for 17 years, until her death in 2008; he was the loving
41	41	father of two sons, Kye and Kenneth, as well as an affectionate
42	42	stepfather to Joanne Abernathy and Lucy Maxwell; over the years,
43	43	he was blessed with two granddaughters, Kristin and Kourtney,
44	44	and three step-grandchildren, Cassandra, Justin, and Jacob; and
45	45	WHEREAS, Hank Kastrop lived a life rich in personal and
46	46	professional achievements, and he will forever be a source of
47	47	inspiration to those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be it
48	48	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
49	49	Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Julian E. Kastrop
50	50	and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and many friends;
51	51	and, be it further
52	52	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
53	53	his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
54	54	so in memory of Hank Kastrop.
