| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | citizens of Jim Hogg County in mourning the loss of Lilia Peña, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | who died May 14, 2017, at the age of 85; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Lilia Peña was a highly respected member of her |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | community who served the citizens of Jim Hogg County for more |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | than 40 years; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, She was born on May 1, 1932, in Hebbronville, and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | she began her career in the county clerk's office as a typist in |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | 1953; conscientious and hardworking, she went on to serve as |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | deputy clerk and as chief deputy clerk, and in 1974 she was |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | elected county and district clerk for Jim Hogg County; she served |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | with distinction and was reelected to serve a total of five |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | consecutive terms as county and district clerk; she retired in |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | 1994; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Lilia Peña was guided in all things by her strong |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Catholic faith; she was a lifelong congregant of Our Lady of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Guadalupe Catholic Church in Hebbronville and was a member of the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | church's Sociedad de Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Lilia Peña enriched the lives of all who knew her |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | with her warmth and enthusiasm; she was beloved by many, and her |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | dedication to serving the citizens of Jim Hogg County will not be |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | forgotten; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | family of Lilia Peña: her daughter, Fantina Garcia; her |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | grandchildren, Clarissa Sweatt and Claudia S. Esquivel; and her |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | six great-grandchildren; and, be it further |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |

| 35 | 35 | | memory of Lilia Peña. |
