11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 894
22 WHEREAS, The John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical
33 Science in Houston has improved public knowledge of health,
44 medical science, and human anatomy for decades; and
55 WHEREAS, Established in 1969 as the Museum of Medical
66 Science, the institution was located within the Houston Museum of
77 Natural Science until 1996, when it opened an independent
88 facility in the Houston Museum District; it underwent a
99 significant expansion in 2011 to further advance its mission; and
1010 WHEREAS, Also known as the Health Museum, this
1111 much-visited attraction presents scientific information in an
1212 entertaining manner that fosters curiosity, and it encourages
1313 learning through a unique interactive approach; its educational
1414 programs are carefully guided by members of the medical,
1515 academic, philanthropic, and business communities who serve on a
1616 committee of the board of directors; and
1717 WHEREAS, A member institution of the Texas Medical Center,
1818 the Health Museum is the only Smithsonian Affiliate within the
1919 Houston Museum District; its programs are enriched by
2020 partnerships with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer
2121 Center, The University of Texas Health Science Center, Baylor
2222 College of Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital, Saint Luke's
2323 Episcopal Hospital, Park Plaza Hospital, the YMCA of Greater
2424 Houston, and the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, as well as community
2525 organizations and other like-minded groups; since its inception,
2626 the museum has earned numerous accolades, among them a Mental
2727 Health America of Greater Houston Award and a University of
2828 Houston Cougar 100 Award; and
2929 WHEREAS, The John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical
3030 Science has fascinated and informed nearly three million
3131 visitors over the course of its history, and it is indeed
3232 deserving of special recognition; now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3434 Legislature, hereby honor the John P. McGovern Museum of Health
3535 and Medical Science and commend its administrators and staff for
3636 excelling in their educational mission; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3838 the museum as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
