| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical |

| 3 | 3 | | Science in Houston has improved public knowledge of health, |

| 4 | 4 | | medical science, and human anatomy for decades; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1969 as the Museum of Medical |

| 6 | 6 | | Science, the institution was located within the Houston Museum of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Natural Science until 1996, when it opened an independent |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | facility in the Houston Museum District; it underwent a |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | significant expansion in 2011 to further advance its mission; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Also known as the Health Museum, this |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | much-visited attraction presents scientific information in an |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | entertaining manner that fosters curiosity, and it encourages |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | learning through a unique interactive approach; its educational |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | programs are carefully guided by members of the medical, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | academic, philanthropic, and business communities who serve on a |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | committee of the board of directors; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, A member institution of the Texas Medical Center, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the Health Museum is the only Smithsonian Affiliate within the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Houston Museum District; its programs are enriched by |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | partnerships with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Center, The University of Texas Health Science Center, Baylor |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | College of Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital, Saint Luke's |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Episcopal Hospital, Park Plaza Hospital, the YMCA of Greater |

| 24 | 24 | | Houston, and the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, as well as community |

| 25 | 25 | | organizations and other like-minded groups; since its inception, |

| 26 | 26 | | the museum has earned numerous accolades, among them a Mental |

| 27 | 27 | | Health America of Greater Houston Award and a University of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Houston Cougar 100 Award; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Science has fascinated and informed nearly three million |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | visitors over the course of its history, and it is indeed |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | deserving of special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby honor the John P. McGovern Museum of Health |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | and Medical Science and commend its administrators and staff for |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | excelling in their educational mission; and, be it further |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | the museum as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
