SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 90 In Memory of Samuel Washington Sr. WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and commemorates the life of the Reverend Samuel Washington Sr., who died in January of 2017 at the age of 87; and WHEREAS, Samuel Washington was born on September 3, 1929, to Robert and Pearlie Washington, in Natchez, Mississippi; he married the late Annette Champ in 1955, and they moved to Dallas; the couple was blessed with four children, Timothy James, Samuel Lee, Lois Ann Washington, and Elizabeth Singleton; his children and grandchildren were a source of much pride and joy; and WHEREAS, He established Roberts Ready to Wear Store in 1960, and the business provided quality family clothing to the Dallas community for 56 years; and WHEREAS, A devout Christian throughout his life, he accepted his call to the ministry in 1960; after attending Bishop College, he joined the ministerial team at Saint Matthew Baptist Church, and he went on to serve as pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Kerens until his death; and WHEREAS, Reverend Washington was active in a wide range of professional and civic organizations, including the South Dallas Merchant Association, the Dallas Ministerial Alliance, and the Friendship District Association, and he received numerous awards for his contributions to the community and his achievements; and WHEREAS, He married LaVerne Barton Sneed in 2006, and the couple served New Hope Baptist Church and the Kerens community with compassion and generosity; and WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and dignity, he gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten; and WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of the Reverend Samuel Washington Sr.; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Samuel Washington Sr. West ________________________________ President of the Senate I hereby certify that the above Resolution was adopted by the Senate on February 1, 2017, by a rising vote. ________________________________ Secretary of the Senate ________________________________ Member, Texas Senate
